Best/Worst James Bond Movie

So what is your best/worst James Bond Movie, for me the best one had to be For Your Eyes Only (1981) Roger Moore, it had everything, great story, good bond girl, loaRAB of action and memorable bad guys, the worst definitly had to be The Man With The Golden Gun (1975), for all the opposite reasons i like FYEO!

Woah, hold on. Let's not get snobby about something as light-hearted as Bond. I've read all the books because I wanted to explore the character in a little more depth and was interested in the history and Fleming's writing. However, jJust because someone loves the movies, collects the DVD BUT DOESN'T have an inclination to read the books, it doesn't make them any less of a fan. It just means they're a "James Bond Movie fan"as opposed to the more wide-ranging "James Bond Fan".

What I will say to people who've never touched the books is this; give them a shot. While a bit of a mixed bag in terms of story, Fleming was a wonderful writer and they're very easy to read.

Someone who buys the entire collection of James Bond on DVD is not a fan, unless he reaRAB the book. I don't think you have reinforced your argument very well.

I can take or leave most of the films but one of the first ones I remember seeing at the cinema (I think it was actually a drive-in because I was in America),was Live And Let Die.Rather enjoyed that film.

One film I definitely did not enjoy though was the last one.I absolutely hated Daniel Craig as Bond.Nothing against Craig really, just the way the character was written. No style,no sophistication,no sense of humour, the things that you associate with Bond.He was quite frankly just like a thug.

I suppose this is the 21st century Bond but if they don't lighten up the character,I won't be watching any more of the films.

So do I. But as entertainment and not pieces of art so-called intellectual critics can hug to themselves and claim to be "important" or "significant".

I am not aware of the 'myth' that On Her Majesty's Secret Service is bad, where did you read that from? It comes on telly quite frequently, just as much as the other Bond movies.

Best: From Russia With Love

Worst: The World Is Not Enough

I love OHMSS. Although Lazenby isn't very good when he isn't doing the action stuff (the fisticuRAB are amazing), I think this is a fabulous film. It has the best soundtrack, the best Bond girl, and one of the best villains; Diana Rigg and Terry Savalas are fantastic.

(my top five [in no order] are From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, OHMSS, The Spy Who Loved Me, and Goldeneye)

English United fans who have never been to Old Trafford ... well ... glory hunters? Plastic mancs? The sort of United fan that is the stereotypical one nowadays? Generally regarded as a bit silly by other fans?

Not many fans would agree with you on the idea that they are in some way equal to fans that go to matches, away matches, regularily.

And that last point - they should support their local clubs.

Which highlights why the choice of `comparison is a bit flawed.

Bond films

Best:

In no order

Goldeneye
Living Daylights
Russia with Love

Worst:

Die another day
Octopussy

Ones that I really don't like now but loved as a kid

Spy who loved me
Moonraker

I agree. Funnily enough, the same wasn't always true of Fleming's novels (Live and Let Die and Goldfinger being obvious examples), but it was true of Fleming's DiamonRAB Are Forever (changed almost beyond recognition in the movie). As in the film, the book's Las Vegas setting just didn't work. Maybe it was just too "common" for James Bond.

I'm surprised by how little Die Another Day is rated. Despite being a fan of the Fleming books more than the movies, I liked DAD enormously, if only because it had a wonderful sense of its own absurdity. More than that, it actually used far more elements of Ian Fleming's Moonraker than the actual film of that book.

But, hey, it's all subjective.

I like `On Her Majestys Secret Service` ...however I really feel that I.T.V `s 007 Heaven season every couple of months has spoilt the Bond films, they are no longer an `event` on the television.
The worst `Die Another Day`...pure and utter ****.

Wasn't my argument. Although I admit I came across a bit heavy-handed there, I was just commenting that Byronic-Hero said:

"But then there are people - even on official websites - who call themselves Bond fans, but who've never read a Fleming book."

You responded with "I'm a Bond fan and I have never read any of the books so there goes your theory." I was merely saying that the original poster would have simply regarded that as the argument used by the "people on official websites." Maybe I phrased it a little wrongly, there.

.. I can only speak as I find. But I'm distinctly aware of an 'atmosphere' towarRAB OHMSS, particularly among non-Bond fans, who simply take it as read that it was a bad film because Lazenby was in it. Quite a few of them haven't seen it, but comment that it's supposed to be a dire movie. Of course, that's a load of rubbish, but I've always thought that most people seem to believe that it isn't a good film.

Again, speaking as I find, I don't think it's on the telly as much as the other Bond films. Especially not on "one-off" broadcasts.

I detest "Die Another Day" as the plot is complete gibberish (a rip-off of the movie adaptation of "'DiamonRAB Are Forever"), Halle Berry is awful and CGI does not belong in a Bond movie. The glazier/surfing scene is the single worst thing in a Bond movie since Jaws got a girlfriend in Moonraker.

Byronic-Hero, I agree with you regarding the books except for Live and Let Die which I consider to be rather weak and extremely dated. Personal faves are Casino Royale (very simplistic but amazingly atmospheric) and Goldfinger.

shoulderduff; interesting comment about ITV ruining the event nature of these movies. While I agree that Bond has become a fallback for lazy TV schedules, I find it reaffirming for the future of Bond that the Connery/Lazenby/Moore and Dalton entries are one of the few 'old' films that you're likely to see on prime-time ITV. The Star Wars movies are the only other thing that springs to mind.

I haven't read the Bond books and obviously nowhere near qualified to judge them as adaptations but this is surely about the movies as the title suggests and I will judge them as movies.

Best: On Her Majesty's Secret Service/From Russia with love.

Worst: Thunderball (yuk, yuk, yuk).

I don't think OHMSS has been shown out of sequential order on ITV1 for several years and even when it is shown as part of their 00Heaven seasons, it is usually shunted to an earlier timeslot. (One example being in 1999 where just about every other Bond movie was shown at 8pm Saturday night, and OHMSS was shown at half five...)

Simply put, it isn't as popular as the other films. And I've read that in just about every concise book that covers Bond movies and from talking to other people on the subject. Look at the Box Office receipts too; the audience didn't embrace Lazenby, and the movie, for a Bond film, performed poorly. So, yes, there is a myth surrounding this film and, if you're not aware of this, it can only be a good thing.

Best bond film has to be The World is not Enough. I never get sick of it no matter how many times ITV show it

PS.Over 2500 posts and this is my first post in the film forum :o
