Aww, I just thought of another: The Descent.

It's currently being shown on $ky movies.

IMDB of 7.5 with over 16,000 votes! :)

There's a nice scene near the beginning filmed at Gaping Gill.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (I could not sleep after that, i truly believed that I would have a nightmare about it and how bad would that be!!)

An American Werewolf In London
. Comic/horror - some nasty bits!

Poltergeist

The Shining -
scary twins and women bloated dead in the bath... 'Come and play with me, forever and ever...' UGH!

The Sixth Sense - just plain spooky.

Hi,

I am 15 years old and got some money for passing some of my exams.

I would like to buy a new horror film, but don't want to waste my moeny on something rubbish.

I would just like to ask you what the best horror film is that you have watched (and it has to be really scary) lol

Thanks this would help greatly

Becky xxxx

DepenRAB what kind of horror you like. Suspenseful sci-fi gore, that would have to be Event Horizon. Gore alone, Ichii the Killer or Audition. Gore/twisted-ness, Saw/Hostel. Don't bother with anything like Texas Chainsaw Masscare, they're not remotely scary. For tension, The Descent. For a surreal hour and a half and a bit of sadistic laughter, Nightmare on Elm Street.

The Thing - John Carpenter version.

I have been an avid fan of this genre for many years, and this is the creepiest one I have seen.

Other good ones are -

Alien
Night of the Living Dead
An American werewolf In London

...and maybe -

Halloween
Nightmare On Elm Street

I'm missing out one or two, because they are more to do with blood slopfests than tension and story.

It's hard to say what other people will find scary. For me The Grudge (remake) was the only film that scared me in the last few years, but to others it is just a series of spring-loaded cats. (I've also seen Hostel, Saws I and II, The Descent and many more which apparently scare some people.)

I'm also not sure what you mean by "new". Some of the recommendations here are decidedly old. Silent Hill is just out on DVD and I've bought it after seeing in the cinema. I liked it because it was quite visual.

I'd go with that too, especially the bit where that dudes head came off and grew spider legs.

Poltergeist and omen were also pants-shittingly scary when I was a kid.

For a totally unsubtle horror film my choice would be the Evil Dead - the reviews at the time called it ferocious and I would agree with that.

For subtle, and easily the scariest film I have ever seen, and one which I would still struggle to watch on my own late at night, I would plump for the original "The Haunting". Its what you don't see in that film that scares the beejeesus out of you.

Absolutely agree with you there. The Haunting is my all-time favourite horror movie--I watch it every year at Halloween. Even though I know what's coming, it still scares the hell out of me. Just goes to show that you don't need fantastic special effects. In this case, less is more.

The Sixth Sense and The Shining are great.

My favourite* ever though has to be The Silence of The Lambs.
Amazing performances from Jodie Foster and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
A really good thriller, and pretty gory too if you like that kind of thing!

*or should that be FAVArite?
