At Least just One...

I kind of had it with these mouth flaps. Has there EVER been any anime, at least, ONE anime with good Lip-Sync/Movement? And high Key Frames?

Ever saw the opening of BECK? Or the singing sequences in Haruhi?

Good lip-sync can get into the uncanny valley. Its creepy!

Some high budget movies can afford it without looking horrible.

Otherwise you're the only one who cares that much

As I understand it, most anime do things the opposite way as Western animation-- they animate the lip flaps first, then make the voice actors time their lines to them instead of animating the lips to pre-recorded lines. It's a budget thing.

On the bright side, that means that it's a lot easier to dub things into different languages without making them look like an old Godzilla movie.

The only exceptions are likely to be big-budget theatrical fare. Have you watched stuff like Akira or just about anything by Studio Ghibli?

The thing is, expecting that level of quality from something made for a TV budget, especially in a show whose target audience is one particular demographic of the already-small-compared-to-the-US population of a tiny island nation just isn't realistic.

Well, there's AKIRA, but honestly, I think lip-sync looks creepy on anime characters

You're going overboard about this, and you shouldn't let that bother you

And so, the budget rears it's ugly head. *points up*

However, Gintama does it from time to time. The effect is oddly surreal. XD

I wonder if I can find a gif of Gintoki saying "just do it!" >.>

Kurenai (a really great anime that came out this year) used the Western technique of pre-recording the voices and then animating the lips, I believe.

Actually this is what I was going to say as well after reading the question although I wasn't aware Kurenai had used a different technique... I just knew watching it that it definitely matched up a lot better then other animes I've watched.

Of course most of the time I don't notice too much since I am looking at the subtitles and not their lips.

Maybe it was that video I saw, "Why Anime SUCKS. Why American is better." The Talk about Key Frames and all. Also Anime fans and MUGEN feast on my brain, I can't stop it!

Cartoons and Comic Books have done a lot of things and this is the respect they get? I'm not trying to be mean but What has Anime and Manga done that was so groundbreaking?

Well, people like it because it's something different from what you're used to, and with Japanese media, you see a different and more complex atmosphere from Western media, plus in my opinion in anime and manga, you feel like you can relate to these characters like you know them personally, and honestly I learned more from anime than American cartoons, well that's my opinion, and as I've said lip-sync just looks so damn creepy on an anime character

Be careful: we do have a rule on the books here about bashing anime as a whole. (Before you ask, yes, we do have an equivalent rule about bashing American animation as a whole.) If done in the wrong way (as this video you refer to seems to be doing), it's considered flamebait. If you're actually interested in hearing what anime fans find so attractive about anime, fair enough; but if your only point is "anime sucks," make it elsewhere.

In any case, I don't see why it has to be an either/or thing. Anime has certain general strengths and weaknesses, and Western animation has certain general strengths and weaknesses, but none of them are universal among ALL examples of animation on one side of the Pacific. And as time passes and more and more American animators are influenced by anime and vice versa, it becomes less and less possible to make generalizations about what American animation or anime is like as a whole.

In short: I like what I like, and what country it was made in has very little impact on that.

The lip synch thing bothered me when I first started watching anime; but I got used to it. Its just more cost effective for the Japanese to do it that way.

...and goofy-looking anime characters really do look kinda creepy when the mouth movements are animated properly.

Boobs and Blood. Seriously, few anime fans will admit it; but the novelty of seeing boobs, blood, and naughty worRAB in a cartoon was a big reason many American anime fans were initially drawn to it.

Call me crazy, but I think the person who made the "Why anime SUCKS!!!" video might be a little biased.
Besides, its not like all Western shows have stellar animation. Proper lip synch does not automatically equal great animation quality.

WOW! I made someone's sig! I feel so honored!
