Are you for a Constitutional Amendment banning burning the flag?

My friend, my brother gave his life in Viet Nam, and he did so blindly because it was a war that the politicians in Washington wanted to control. They were unwilling to allow the generals in the field to fight the war, as it should have been done. He gave his life, so Americans would have the right of free expression. I would never burn the American flag, but I would never want to have laws prohibiting a freedom of expression to outlaw the burning of the flag.

BTW, do you know the proper way of a disposal of the flag ?

Let me summarize recent posts by VoR -

He will do anything - up to and including violence against actual, real people to protect the flag from being burned. He then said we did not need to worry about said violence from him as long as we don't burn the flag (something we are legally protected to do, mind you.)

If threatening physical harm to someone who won' t act in accordance to your personal wishes - regardless of that person's actuals rights - does not qualify as facism, pray tell me, just what is it?

And even if I insult those who disagree with me - at least I don't threaten them.

I would agree that you fell in the former category. I fall in the latter. I was old enough to have a draft card, but just young enough to miss the end of the Vietman War and went to college instead of the military.

That's their job; they report news. When Fox shows a picture of Osama, that doesn't make Fox part of AQ now does it?

You said "socialist leftists" that "desecrate the flag". Now, I'm waiting for a link to a few. You've so far provided none, but moaned at a media organisation showing pictures of people burning flags. That doesn't mean they do it themselves, nor does it mean they support it.

Still waiting for a link (asking for 2nd time now;)).

Here's a hint - the more tyrannical the United States becomes, the more people will want to burn the flag. A ban on flag-burning won't help.

Speach can come in many forms. A picture, a video, a statue, a flag, a building, a commercial. It's not limited to the spoken word. Speach is the expression of an idea. In the case of flag burning, it's displeasure in the government. In the case of the flag burner smiling out of a recently formed gap in his teeth, it's known as physical communication. :)

and suddenly Vor's list of incorrect statements has finished another lap around the universe!

The area which was litterally saturated with cruise missiles was sparsely populated. The Brass complained about "hitting empty tents with multi-million dollar cruise missiles."

Suddenly you are concerned with killing innocent civilians? Seriously, you have no problem when Bush's policies gets a few thousand killed, but the instant Clinton's massive cruise missile launch aganist terrorists kills one innocent, you're all over him. Talk about massive hypocracy. You bitch about clinton not doing anything, then you bitch when his attacks on terrorism cause collateral.

Seriously, get some therapy and some education.

OK, forget the first ammendment. For the time being assume that free speech means just that, verbal speech. In this country, you don't just start making laws against actions because you don't like them (ok, some try but you aren't supposed to). I would like you to give me justification of a law or ammendment banning flag burning without bringing morals into the picture and without using the disrespect argument (since there is no law against disrespect).

By the way the principle is that we can nonviolently disagree with the government, which is what we are doing, not so much as free speech, but it has been ruled as part of the first Ammendment.

banning flag-burning is banning the main principle of the 1st ammendment. The point of the 1st ammendment is that we can disagree with the government and state in any way we feel like as long as it doesn't violate the safety of others or their rights. I'm not allowed to burn the flag in your yard or in the middle of a shopping center because the first would be tresspassing and the second would be public disorder or whatever it's called. But if I want to disagree with the government and state it as long as it doesn't hurt anyone else, I should have that right.

I'm sure your argument will be that people died under that flag and people shouldn't be allowed to burn it. People are allowed to hate the military, the government, and everything they fight for. I probably wouldn't do it but it's the principle that matters. We can't be forcing people to agree with anything and if they want to disrespect the country and people fighting for it that is ok under the 1st ammendment. Actually I really don't think burning the flag disrespects the military, but even if it did it should be legal.

The Flag Code - Respect for Flag
Respect for flag No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.

(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.

(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folRAB, but always allowed to fall free.

Bunting of blue, white, and red always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker's desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

(e) The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used, or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled, or damaged in any way.

(f) The flag should never be used as a covering for a ceiling.

(g) The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature.

(h) The flag should never be used as a receptacle for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

(i) The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkin or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

(j) No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform. However, a flag patch may be affixed to the uniform of military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. The flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing. Therefore, the lapel flag pin being a replica, should be worn on the left lapel near the heart.

(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. (Disposal of Unserviceable Flags

Clearly any True American (TM) can see, that its heroes have died to protect the Flag as a symbol of American Power. They died, so that the government might live without criticism.
