Apple iPhone 3G [S] vs. HTC/Google Nexus One

Nice! So far every single iPhone to Nexus One review has been positive, makes me very re-assured to list my iPhone 3GS on ebay today where my N1 comes in monday morning.

How does the web browsing and e-mail compare on Nexus One (moreso Android 2.1) vs. 3GS (iPhone OS 3.1.3)? Looking for specifics here as I hate fetching with the 3GS, and do wish I had a higher resolution screen for browsing though Safari itself is perfect.

How about Android's YouTube client as implemented in the Nexus One vs. the 3GS app?

I'm seriously considering the Nexus One. I have the 9700 and 3GS in my hands now and need a fourth contender. The third will be the SE XPERIA X10 when it comes out, though if I get that it will be a leap of faith (and a lot of $$$).

I have both. Haven't really done alot of emailing on the nexus but the browser is real good, however the iPhone's safari browser is still noticeablly better. Renders more accurate and zooms in and out more precise and also pinch to zoom is a bit smoother. N1 is a close second and definitely usable.

Havent done much Youtube so cant say about that.

Nexus one advantages are...

-Larger AMOLED Screen

-Native Multitasking

-Unlocked Phone

-Open OS

iPhone 3G Advantages

-Better Music

-Better browser

-Better Touchscreen

-Much more visible in direct sun

-More polished OS

I try to like the N1 but it is obvious the 3GS is a superior phone.

Or you could just put your most used apps on the first home screen page and not have to think about where you put your apps. Android has stuff all over the place so it's easy to get mixed up. While I think the iPhone could use an update to it's home screen I don't want them to go the way of Android where there is a separate desktop and launcher. Apps are getting larger and storing their data on removable storage is not smart since as soon as your memory card is gone or stops working you lose your app data.

Maybe, but having advertisement all over the web should help quite a bit. You can't go to a site without seeing it the last week. I don't think it's going to take off at all until it hits VZW. T-Mobile isn't exactly the most popular carrier and who wants to use it on EDGE with AT&T??

I can't say I agree with this. I think it feels pretty good in the hand and I even kinda like the soft-touch finish to the paint. Does feel somewhat fragile though, nothing like the Droid or iPhone for feel.

Well I don't want to downgrade so I would never get T-mobile. I dislike the support you get with google. I hate verizons business practices and I'm happy with my iPhone right now so I'll be ok.

it's a no brainer. i will get the next iphone.
android and att is not going to work like an iphone does now, for the next 5 years.

a nexus1 user with limited use and overpriced device is just not feasible for the average consumer.

Agree 100%. I think the iPhone is just getting tired. The same exact interface for several years. I am waiting for some of the newer Motorola Androids to come out.

I love the Motorola RF I can make calls where the iPhone can't. Plus I have a couple friends at MOT so the phones come free. :2thumbs:

I never once directly called YOU a fanboy. I was referring in one post to everyone who justifies an area where the iPhone is inept and says "we dont need it anyway" kind of like alot of them were saying about MMS and copy/paste. Or when I certain phone has an advantage in an area they blow it off as not important. You know the ones that think everything is inferior to the iPhone and there might as well not be another device out there because if they think the iPhone is better, then why the hell else would anyone else want another device. I never once called you anything, and if I did I would kindly ask you to refer me to where I did.

and like naplesbill, I have owned three iPhones, every one on launch day and still own two. I'm plenty well informed when it comes to the capabilities of the iPhone. I'm a fan of the iPhone without a doubt. But I don't defend Apple's ridiculous control over the iPhone and them only allowing you to do what they think you need to do with it. It's a matter of principle. You shouldn't have to jailbreak to get it to do what my N95 from 3 years ago does.

I haven't been on hofo for a while but I stopped by to see what you guys think of the N1. I've read every post on this thread and I have come to a definite conclusion and that is that we take this opinion sharing thing too seriously.

I love my iphone. So much so that last week I paid $140.00 (almost as much as I paid for my previous phone)to replace the main board.

Now to the point: By "phone killer" I do not take that to mean that a phone is now obsolete! In my opinion it means only that the technology has been surpassed. By this definition, IMHO the iphone is dead :goodness:
Long live the king (N1)

Am I gonna switch? No, as I said I love my iphone!

i just want to get away from the iPhone so bad, but i keep coming back to it. I love the android OS; im just hoping this nexus one is my answer to the stale bordum that i have known to call "iPhone." Im just waiting for Monday morning for when the nexus shows up :). Ever since the Nexus One came out for T-Mo i have wanted it, but being that i "need 3G i had no choice.

I wouldn't dream of getting an IPhone -- I'm just not an Apple fan, the stuff the fanbois view as some Jobsian vision of simplicity I view as troubling restrictions. I don't want a phone that *could* multitask but doesn't due to artificial restrictions, I don't want to jailbreak my phone just to be able to put my own apps on (as opposed to being forced to go through an app store), and I don't want a phone where the app store itself is so restrictive. Also, Flash -- IDK if the Nexus One has Flash yet, but I'm sure it will have it, whereas Adobe has had Flash for IPhone for like a year but Jobs specifically will not allow a Flash plugin, or alternate browsers (that could support Flash), onto it. So, no question, Nexus One.

(OK, this is theoretical for me -- I have Verizon -- but I do plan to get a Droid, and have 0 interest in IPhone even if a CDMA model does come out.)

Very good post.

One more thing... on the Android, you can have one widget which gives you instant access to wifi settings, volume, airplane mode, pattern lock on/off, GPS.... if you want to save battery life, and don't need, say, GPS, one tap on the GPS widget turns it off.... go back to your home screen later, and one tap turns it back on.

How many taps do you need on an iPhone, to turn GPS (or mute, or other settings) on and off?

I'm really having a hard time picking which phone I want to use right now. On one hand, the iPhone does everything I need it to do - more than perfectly. The Nexus One, on the other hand, does everything I need it to do, somewhat better than the iPhone. The multitasking abilities on Android devices make it so much fun to use and the iPhone just gets tedious when I have to switch between apps, instead of putting it into a background task.
