Apple iPhone 3G [S] vs. HTC/Google Nexus One

I like the 3GS is a fantastic device, really just top notch. Its perfect for mom+pop to even the biggest of nerds(jailbreak it up, hack away)

That said, after owning iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3Gs, I'm very intersted in the Nexus one. Its bring some very impressive hardware to the table, and I'm eager to jump into Android, properly(I had a Archos Tablet for a little while, which was neat, but the Nexus One seem a lot more finished based on reviews)

Both devices are great, and long with WebOS, have brought a ton of change to the smartphone world in the past few years.

The point is that Apple isn't staying still. You treat the Nexus One as though it's the ne plus ultra of smartphones and that Apple can't possibly beat it or its successors from here on out. That 1GHz Snapdragon (which isn't 2X faster, despite your protests) isn't going to be considered top-end for very long, and it's not as though there aren't better components in some areas than what HTC is using even now.

Moreover, your statements assume an all-things-being-equal advantage. That's not true. Nexus One photos are noisy in low light; I've taken concert photos with my iPhone 3GS where people were surprised that a camera phone was responsible. And while it's entirely possible the next iPhone won't have flash, if it does that's an edge it'll have.

Look: the only listed phone in your profile is the Motorola SLVR. I've owned two iPhones, and I've had more hands-on time with the variety of Android phones out there (Nexus, Hero, Galaxy, G1/Dream, myTouch/Magic, Eve) than you'll probably have all year. I can say that it's no guarantee that better specs and multiple hardware partners will guarantee success -- and the Nexus One certainly won't be the phone that cracks the iPhone's sales run.

I saw an article on engadget earlier this week about a technology that will revise power consumption in phones. I'm sure we'll hear about it at MWC and that may change battery life once it gets implemented. With snapdragon processors becoming so common, it makes sense that something needs to be done.

I seriously want a zune hd but because of jailbreaking abilities, I may end up with an ipod touch in the near future.

This approval process has been under fire lately. In fact, Apple took quite some heat.

Frankly, you do not hear apparently many developers complaining about the approval process since it does affect their livelihood. You spend months developing an app and suddenly Apple will toss this out? Figure out why the FTC is investigating Apple after the Google Voice fiasco. And why the lead developer of the iPhone Facebook app quit the project.

The approval process also has not stopped potential malware from getting into the app store at all, like that incident with the Chinese developer that had 900+ apps pulled from the App Store.

Also the App Store approval process never stopped apps claiming to be from CNN, Time, NYT, and even using their logos, even though these apps are not officially from these agencies. These apps have been forced to change their logos and iconography.

Do note that there are already viruses and worms for the iPhone---the security controls are all open once you jailbreak the phone.

Total nonsense. iTunes has become nothing more than a way to lock your pocketbook and iPhone to Apple.

I started using iTunes with my iPod 30GB Video. It was good then only for the playlist management. The syncing is slow and unavoidable. God forbid you have a computer crash and you don't have a backup of your iTunes folder. You will have to start completely over, even though you have all the necessary restoration info on your iPod.

I also feel sorry for all the people who have bought all their music via iTunes and it's all in .m4a or .m4p format. This pretty much guarantees you'll be sticking with iTunes (at least the non tech types).

The interface is lame and outdated as well. Just look to the Zune software to see what a music librarian type software is capable of. Media Monkey is also much better at reorganizing and managing tags, etc.

How about the stupidity that is the authorizing of your PC. I am an IT guy and I am constantly installing/reinstalling OSs on my computers. If you forget to deauthorize your pc then you will run out of your five authorizations very quickly. You can only clear authorization from the installation you authorized it from. If you reach your five authorizations you can only clear "all" once every 12 months. While this may sound trivial to some it is just one more annoyance that is associated with iTunes.

iTunes is one of the biggest reasons I dumped my 3Gs. Every other phone I have had, or currently own, allows me direct access to copy my media to from without any proprietary software.

So, don't make statements about people not knowing how to properly utilize iTunes when that is something you couldn't possibly know. I am glad you are happy with iTunes but there are many of us who are not.

Android has better notifications. I'll give you that hands down, but who cares if you can tell the progress of an App download... If it worked consistently on Android it wouldn't even be an issue, but I can even count how many times I've had downloads or intalls hang.

I stopped using Bluetooth. Sorry but I really want to cut down on radiation issues, and I especially don't like a device on my ear, so close to my brain constantly radiating. And I do not use my cellphone driving, not even with BT or hands off, which I still find sufficiently distracting. Either I park to answer my phone or I don't answer my phone at all.

I never regarded the speaker on the 3GS to be loud and clear.

Support on the Nexus One, that's a problem though I can always find support on othe Android phones. But then again, that's no different from any of the stuff I buy in eBay or online.

With the Nexus One I actually don't have to deal with proprietary cables. The USB cable I use to hook it to my laptop to load music? From a Nokia N85. The charger it is on right now I use it to charge? From a Blackberry Tour. And I love this charger because you can change the ends with Blackberry provided tips that lets you adapt to different outlet formats around the world when traveling.

.m4p angers me the most. I can't remove it without paying Apple a fee, and if I convert it I have to find 3rd party software and it has to be lossless (large files) so it doesn't sound any worse than it already does.
iTunes is a JAIL, I still use it though. I know there is software out there that will get my stuff off of the iPhone so I don't have to worry about that.

Lol. Having tons of new hardware is great. Nothing like fragmentation. 20 phones all with different capabilities. Interestingly as of writing this there any many apps in the Android market that do not work properly with one or more Android devices. Should make for real fun :)

It's funny to me sometimes when I'm using the Nexus One and things seem to not be happening at all or it gets bogged down. It was worse on the Hero, but I think Android needs some serious optimizations because it gets pretty ridiculous sometimes. Yesterday the had some serious lag going on when a call came in causing me to miss it and there are times when the virtual keyboard inexplicably just goes into slow-mo mode. Point is that Android needs serious hardware or some work done on software.

Before you start talking about sound quality I think you should keep in mind that even though iPods have not been the absolute best for sound quality they aren't even close to being bad and so far the iPhone is unrivaled. Check back when there is an Android device that matches even last-gen iPhone hardware and we'll talk.

I am happy with my jailbroken iPhone. The Android OS doesn't even appeal to me at this point. It's being taken in so many different directions right now, that it's hard to take seriously.

I just went from a iPhone 3g to the Nexus. Overall the N1 is a better phone, but there are a couple nagging issues that Im frustrated with. The lack of the ability to add .vcf email file attachments is beyond retarded. The workaround is to login to web gmail and save to sd, then add from sd but thats just a pain in the ***

The touchscreen seems a little buggy sometimes. The voice to text feature is awesome, and multi tasking is kickass. I love being able to read an email then go right back to the texting screen and continue with what I was doing.

Im sure the issues will be resolved, and so far Im quite happy with my new phone.

With the recent update to the Nexus, a lot of software bugs were squashed and functions were added. (native multi touch - no more need for 3rd party apps).
Now that iPhone fan boys have nothing else to bash about, which phone do you plan on getting and why. Or maybe you might want to switch carriers to get the Nexus. There is suppose to be a nexus 1 for all major American companies, meaning Tmobie, Sprint, at&t and Verizon. Would you switch to a different carrier to get the Nexus? Let us know.

I think you are talking to the wrong person. I have not called anyone a fanboy and I can assure you I have owned three iPhones. I know everything it is capable of and everything that it isn't. I also never said it was a bad device.

Yes handcuffed... you are BOUND to itunes if you have a ipod/iphone.

lol

"as long as it was purchased from the itunes media store"

again HANDCUFFED... thats the only way you can do 2 way syncing... not only that but you cannot manage playlist on your iphone then sync the changes back to your computer... again no 2 way syncing...

The syncing is painfully slow wired... and I cant image what it would be wirelessly...

Itunes 9 or whatever needs to be a complete revamp and they need to cut the fat and bring it back to its old days...

even with the 1ghz processor AND 512 mb of RAM I find the android OS to be slower on the nexus one than os x is on the iPhone 3gs.

I've said a few times I think the iPhone camera is better than the Nexus One camera and I still think that way. The main selling points for me are Google Voice and Google Navigation and that's why I'll probably return to Android in the future, but for now I went back to my 3gs. There's a reason alot of us guys that have switched and have also used alot of devices have gone back to the 3gs. Specs alone don't make a device great. I'm definitely not knocking the Nexus One, it's a very good device, but after two weeks with it and once the newness wore off I didn't find my experience to be as enjoyable of that with the iPhone 3gs or the BB 9700 overall.

It's tons more customizable, there's no doubt that it's a lot more fun to use.

As far as functionality and user friendliness go, I can't say anything negative about the iPhone again. I said that I was "getting bored" with it, and that was the entire reason I went and picked up a Nexus One with my federal tax rebate check, and now I'm strongly considering selling it and getting that money back.
