I am disheartened by the negative turn rap has taken. Rap has forgotten it's roots. Instead of kids getting out the hood, off gov't assistance & not living in the PJs, it's all about how much hood credibility you have. How much bling you have. How phat a ride you have. And how many women you can get.
What happened to rap that told a story-even if it was humorous one? Or had a message/point? When did it turn to ALL women being beeotches & ho's, & everyone wanting to emulate a pimp? Talk about keeping it real? Man, keeping it real is about finishing your education, getting a job & making money to provide for you & your family. But that's not what sells. That's too tame for the record execs & the entire industry. So, we're left with this crap that rap has become today.
Now, I'm not saying not to have fun in rap & not talk about the good times, parties, etc. But when I watch a rap video, I can't relate to ANYONE on that video. They're not like me. All the talk of the ice, bling, Moet, Krystal, tvs up in the headrest? The average person can't ever afford that type of lifestyle, yet you have the folks who watch these videoes, doing everything to look like they have something that they can't afford. And in the end, they're left with nothing.
I know going to college to get an education, getting a house, getting a job that will provide for you & your family isn't glamourous & may be too real for some. And I know rap (like other forms of music) is supposed to be an outlet to take us away from the situations our lives may be in.
But there has to be a more positive way to uplift a community, talk about the struggles we all have trying to make it & keep it fun. It's like the music that the rap is over is excellent. But the message sucks.
