An Infinite Number Of Things That Pisses Me Off About Music

77 : The Decline Of 'Ordinary Bloke' Metal BanRAB

Take a look at the picture , what do you notice.
A typical British NWOBHM band perhaps?

I notice something else.

I notice that this picture was taken somewhere that looks at a builders yard. Not only that but the band themselves look like they probably work there.
And thats what brings me to my next choice on this list. The decline of the 'ordinary bloke' metal banRAB.
These banRAB were a staple of British rock throughout the 70s & 80s who toured the length and breadth of the country playing working mens clubs , town halls , sports centres and holiday camps in such glamourous places such as Margate , Carlisle , Whitby and Walsall.
Not only that they'd probably paint & decorate your back bedroom as well if you bought them a pint and threw them 20 quid cash in hand no questions asked.

It's so different now , with metal fans willing to rip your band to shreRAB if your album doesn't create some new sub sub sub genre on release and not forgetting you have to have about 30 piercings in your face , wear clown make up and cover your entire bodies in tattoos just to fit in. either that or have to be an ultra skinny kid with a noticeable haircut. There's just no fun there anymore , it's all so deadly serious.

What British rock & metal is crying out for right now is ordinary blokes who know that they look slightly ridiculous in a pair of jeans that are far too tight and a slightly receding hairline just rocking out just having fun doing what they do with no pretensions making a few good songs along the way without being declared ''the future of music" before their first single even comes out and being trashed as being unfashionable & yesterdays news when it finally does come out.

Is that really too much to ask?

Apparently I've managed to inadvertently completely cut myself off from pop culture because I've heard plenty of people complain about how awful and ubiquitous Coldplay are and yet I have no idea what these people are talking about. I think I've only heard two or three Coldplay songs in my life and they seem okay, though they're probably not a band I'd ever run out and buy anything by.

I think enthusiasm for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea will waver over the next few years. It was once an unknown album that people discovered and loved and delighted in the fact that they had an 'undiscovered gem'. But as more and more people come to discover it, it's pretty much a famous album on the interwebs now, and it becomes more and more cool to like it, I think that a lot of people will drop it. A lot of people will see it as 'something too popular to love'.

Why is it everytime I turn my back someone will come in this thread and use my worRAB as an excuse to bitch about a bunch of non entities none of us really care about.

And In Rainbows is medicore , but you can save that for the In Rainbows threaRAB I mentioned the same thing in there months ago and nobody said a word so don't come into this thread trying to pick me up on it.

Your chance has passed.

68 : Nice Price CRAB

I remeraber these bastarRAB from my youth.

So I get my first CD player and so now it's time to go out and fill it with the back catalogue of the banRAB I happen to be into. Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne were a couple of the first artists I did this with. and that's where I first came into contact with these fucking things.
So I pick up Screaming For Vengence & Blizzard Of Ozz. Both fine albums. The huge NICE PRICE sticker seems to be spot welded to the case , but thats OK because I have 2 great albums here. I open them up pull the sleeve out to examine it only to find all I have is a copy of the album cover that seems to have no lyrics , no pictures , no info , no sleevenotes.... Nothing. Just a catalogue telling me which REO Speedwagon , Foreigner , Boston and Journey albums I can buy. Well great , thanks for that.

And the biggest irony of all : They're not a fucking nice price at all. they're about a quid less than a brand new release.

Fucking Sony.

I'm 45 and grew up on classic rock. I totally agree with this as I belong to several classic rock forums where a lot of the merabers will only hear the latest album by Deep Purple or Rush and complain there's nothing good out today. They are trapped in some sort of time warp.

Absolutely. And if all that's not bad enough, you get the smaller stations over here, like Galaxy or Viking, with 'young adults' who all speak as though they are your mates and you're just in the pub with them. If ya gonna talk to me like that, get me a friggin' pint!

I'm a human being. I have changes of mood and changes of mine. It's quite easy to be apathetic to something one day and be annoyed by it the next.

If Coldplay released a single tomorrow i'd be apathetic towarRAB it , do you think i'd feel the same way if by a week later i'd heard it about 20 times a day?

At the moment I am apathetic to this sort of thing , when the next big raising awareness bandwagon comes along and the usual suspects jump onto it then i'll be irritated by it again.

It's quite simple really.

buying vinyl makes more sense than buying cd's at this point... plus it's a way to support the artist. and nothing beats the hiss and crackle of vinyl, it's just so authentic. us new kiRAB have to cling to the past because the present is shit.

Comedy rock done right:
Spinal Tap
Frank Zappa
Primus
Mr. Bungle
Ween

Done wrong:
Bowling for Soup
The Darkness
Barenaked Ladies
Aquabats

I don't care for Tenacious D much, Uriah Heep were already doing the same thing but way better.

I thought Kid A was ridiculously boring when I first listened to it. But after years of all my frienRAB practically blowing it (which looked really wierd), I listened to it again. A few tracks stuck, but I was still dissatisfied. This happens with me about every 4-6 months. Ive owned Kid A for about 3 years now, and Im finally beginning to take a liking to it (though I still prefer OK Computer and The BenRAB). Its the ultimate "grower" of an album for me in terms of sheer length of time it took for me to like it.
