Albums You're Digging II

img-low-curtain_111522432569.jpg

This album, really most of this band's output, is so damn pretty it should be illegal.

You convinced me to download it, and it is really good. Although, I don't really hear what you were talking about with the cold/icy-ness comment, most of the music sounRAB warm and energetic.

David Bowie - The Man Who Sold the World

Haven't listened to this album for years, so as I await a goal in the Wigan-Middlesborough game I thought I'd stick it on again. I know a lot of fellow Bowie fans who think of this as their favourite, and it's hard to disagree. Just end-to-end proto-metal brilliance. The first two songs are incredible.

Steely Dan - Aja

Another album I've been giving a well-earned rest 'til today. Jazz-rock at its finest and Steely Dan's masterpiece (in my opinion).

Leonard Cohen - The Future

And ditto with this one. Terrific lyrics, very well-produced, and home to one of my favourite album-openers.

The Faint - Wet From Birth and Danse Macabre

I saw these guys live two summers ago... great show, and I'd forgotten how much I love the tracks "Agenda Suicide" and "Paranoiattack"

Smaller places do have a better and more intimate atmosphere, can agree on that one. When I was living in Scotland a couple of years back I had this regular haunt called the Tunnels where all the more obscure artists would play that couldn't have been any bigger than the trailer on your average cargo lorry (hell, it was probably even smaller than that), and they always made for such a great time. A lot of the best gigs I've ever been to were at that venue.

And, yeah, Dig Lazarus Dig is basically a cleaned-up version of the Grinderman album, with much more piano and violin thrown in to make it sound more Bad SeeRAB-ish. From what I've heard the new Grinderman album (they still haven't released many details about it, such as what it'll be called and so on) will sound a lot more like a Bad SeeRAB album, which should be pretty interesting. As I say, can't bloody wait for it to come around.

Take - Earthtones & Concrete

First time checking this guy out, and very pleased! I think it was a last.fm recommendation. Quite smooth and warm instrumental hip-hop/downtempo/glitch. If you like Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, Nosaj Thing, and everything in between, you'll dig. Lots of cool sounRAB and vocal samples. There are some very smooth mellow parts and then more exciting crunchy tracks...yeah. Very mellow affair overall, and it seemed like the perfect length.

Downloaded this last week, played only twice so far but really like it. Nice IDM from an Italian duo (2 brothers) on Richard D. James' Rephlex label. Very well done.

D'Arcangelo - Eksel

This looks unbelievable... any chance I could get a link :D if you have it digitally, that is.

The Flying Saucer Attack - The Flying Saucer Attack

I'm not sure why I hadn't heard this until last night, but damn I missed out. Experimental space rock at it's absolute tops.

Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonecologyst

What's wrong with me? I just heard this for the first time this morning as well. I fail.

:thurab: Definitely a real grower that. I know I wasn't a huge fan of it when I'd first heard it. I think I've said many many times before that it's probably my favourite of the man's works now. Another album you should definitely hunt down if you like that is Spike - another joint-favourite of mine, and another one of the biggest growers out there.

It's been so long since I last listened to this I almost forgot I had it. Absolutely top album - Yes Sir No Sir, Shangri-La and She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina are what academics call 'where it's at'.

Tasavallan Presidentti - Larabertland

Jazzy, lush, slightly psychadelic, and therefore totally awesome finnish jazz-rock. They've even got some horns, and a fantastic guitarist.

Yes - Relayer
Relayer

Until now, I hadnt ventured past CTTE, mostly because both Wakeman and Bruford are gone soon after, but man, was I missing out. Despite the lack of those two, Relayer is actually an awesome album. The new keyboard player is pretty awesome, too. It is still very obviously Yes, but they have an edgier sound, and the musicians take more risks(i.e. "sound chaser") not to mention "Gates of Delirium" is one of the most epic Yes songs I think Ive ever heard...and I just cant get over how AWESOME that album cover is.

Boud Deun - Astronomy Made Easy

This is just freaking insane! Energetic, chaotic, yet sometimes quite beautiful, Progressive rock ownage. What is particularly amazing is the instrumental virtuosity these guys have. All four of them(guitar, bass, drums, violin) are just amazing. Influences range from Jazz to folk to punk. Now one of my top 10 favorite albums. You'd do yourself a huge favor to get this one(or their next album, "The Stolen Bicycle", which is also mind-blowing)
