Albums You're Digging II

I've never heard 'Bound', so I really don't have a basis for comparison, but I do know that the trumpet is a stubborn instrument, melodically speaking, to break out of the confines of the jazz idiom, and I think Cuong Vu does it beautifully on 'Residual'. I do know that I have a pretty short attention span even for most above par attempts at fusion, free jazz, or post-rock, so the fact that I not only can listen to this album, but actually love it really says a lot.

23 Skidoo - Seven Songs (1982)

I first heard this album a couple of months ago and I've been listening to it this week again. It's great. I really love this whole blend of experimenting, industrial, funk, jungle. With only half an hour, this one flies very easy. Here's some taste of it:

1908 - The Sun, the Night, the Moon, the Light

Fantastic stuff! It feels sort of "down" and somewhat dark. Definitely not an upbeat or happy album. Well, to my ears anyway. I love the overall feeling of it. I recommendeded it!

ALWAYS post the artist and album name...plus a few worRAB on the genre/style/overall description of the album would be cool. I only say this to you because I like the artwork but I have no effing clue what that is.

Albert Ayler's Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Impulse Recordings has really amazed me. Anyone interested in free jazz neeRAB to hear it at least once, as Ayler and his enserable never sounded this emotive. For more info, I wrote a review on it here. Also, some of the Amazon reviews for the album are really worth reading.

VOIVOD-NOTHINGFACE (1991)

Quite apart from the phenomenal cover of the the Floyd's Astronomy Domine', this album is proof that not all metal (and especially Thrash that is was lumped in with at the time) is unimaginative and lacks intelligence and forward thinking.

Along with their previous release 'Dimension:Hatross', Voivod took their influences from acid rock and psychedelia and applied it to a Thrash sensibility. 'Missing Sequences' is one of the finest and forward thinkg metal tracks ever recorded and preceded banRAB like Tool who used similar templates.

PJ HARVEY-STORIES FROM THE CITY..(2000)

One of a select few to challenge Patti Smith in terms of musical ingenuity, lyrical complexity and emotional depth. PJ Harvey has always produced interesting music and continues to stretch her musical horizons. This is one of her very best albums and anyone with a mere passing interest in Female singer/songwriters should give this a listen.

THE INCREDIBLE FLYING TORTURE ORCHESTRA (2007)

An album made and created in these very forums! Electronic sounRABcapes slightly off kilter. SounRAB like it's leader!

SOLDIERS OF JAH ARMY-E.P (2004)

Another great roots reggae band that I found on my interweb travels! Old school vibes aplenty!

What up Isla Vista.

I just gave Diamond District "In the Ruff" it's fourth spin, and its status has elevated massively.

Diamond District is a group out of the District of Colurabia, with merabers Oddisee, X.O., and yU. "In the Ruff" (2009) was D.D.'s debut release. Production is tight. MCs bring it and are, for the most part, consistent start to finish. It's got this catchy, smooth piano riff that plays at multiple parts of the album... Really ties it together nicely. Under 70k last.fm plays to date tells me that a lot of folks haven't had the opportunity to listen to this album. Don't sleep on them; With another drop anticipated for 2010, you don't want to wait and have some catching up to do... :)

God damnit I am completely in love with the Church all overv again.... their recent album is just ****ing brilliant... full of the melodic beuaty that makes the band stand out... ande man, they've been doing this for nearly thirty years, while the U2s of this world sound tired.... these guys sound as fresh as a band that recorded its debut this year...
