Albums You're Digging II

Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us

I can't stop listening to this album. According to wikipedia, they are classified as psychedelia, folk, electronica and pop. Now, I've never really been into any electronica, but the minute I heard this album, I was hooked! It perks me up every time I listen to it. I think I have the link somewhere. If anyone is interested, PM me. It has also opened me up to other electronica, which I'm not thrilled about. Electronica fans, send me some suggestions, if you will. :)

I haven't heard as much about 21st Century Breakdown as I did about American Idiot... I guess I could listen to it once and make my own mind up about it, I bought it for my step son, and he seems to love it...

Pearl Jam - Pearl Jam

This is WAY BETTER than everything I've heard about it.... it's a darn fine alt rock album, that's what it is! Full of the stuff I love from this band! Thoroughly recommend it, against all popular opinion...

Mistabishi - Drop

Amazing DnB album from '09. I posted about this one in my journal based on a single song, but I've been listening to the whole thing daily since then. Drop is completely solid in its entirety, with every song being unique and standing on it's own.

Ivde recentley been on a day long Paul Weller binge, and its kind of continued into today as well lol. The album I surprisingly keep coming back to is a live album called 'Days Of Speed' from 2001. It features a good mix of his solo material and a few Jam tracks near the end as well. All of the songs are played acoustically and there is a fantastic alternate version of 'Out Of The Sinking'. Also I had the 'Brand New Start' single for years but never really liked the song until I heard it on this album. Excellent album and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in hearing a different take on some of his better known songs as well as some more obscure ones such as 'The Loved' which i didnt really like that much either until I heard the version on this album:
Didnt like this song at first but its grown on me after hearing this live version:

I realised how beautiful a song this is after hearing this performance:

Excellent alternate version of this song:

Generally I think folk singer/songwriters should be subject to a great scourging. Well, the pseudo following-in-Nick-Drake's-footsteps folk lite that seems to be everywhere these days like some kind of biblical pestilence.

That said I picked up The Tallest Man On Earth's recent 'Wild Hunt' album and I'm really "digging" it. Since I had no experience of this particular artist it was a nice little find. His voice may divide opinion though as it is hardly pretty but if you can get past that the quality of songwriting is very good.

Haha - I actually pulled out my copy of the Antenna cd to check the spelling of the word and then went on to fail to remeraber/see that this was their big 'sellout on a major label' album. Oops. It's weird that I even own the thing (and I only do because I found it very cheap somewhere at one point) because I really only like their first stuff. I haven't even listened to Jupiter in years. But, yea, some the early Hydra Head albums are important to me - especially the first Botch one.

Polvo - In Prism (2009)

What's this? A new math rock album that doesn't sound like ideas that have been beaten to death a thousand times over. The same group who brought energetic post-punk back to the forefront redefined themselves on this album, and a superb transition it is. Might even eclipse Today's Active Lifestyles on their depth chart.

Microdisney - Peel Sessions
There's a brilliant track on this called Everybody Is Dead. It starts off as your typical 80s middle of the road ballad , then the lead singer with his heavy Irish accent goes into a monologue about this girl that's left him and then suddenly starts screaming 'I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU' sounding more & more demented as the song progresses to the point where you know he's just taking the piss.
One of the funniest things I have ever heard.

The Astronauts - Peter Pan Hits the Suburbs
They were around for over 2 decades , recorded around 10 albums and they sound like The Fall doing folk-punk.
How the hell I missed them up till now i'll never know.

The Deep Freeze Mice - Teenage Head in My Refrigerator
Bursting with such post punk classics as 'I Like Digestive Biscuits in My Coffee' , 'My Geraniums Are Bulletproof' and 'Peter Smith Is A Banana'

Iggy Pop - Heroin Hates You
Awesome Iggy bootleg recorded on the New Values tour in 1979 when his band featured Glen Matlock of the Pistols on bass and Brian James of the Damned & Ivan Kral from the Patti Smith band on guitars.

Also, for the past two months, I've been playing the hell out of:

I'm so stoked for the third album.

Favorite tracks (both): Darkest Of Kin, Dry The River, Memories Of The Grove, Just Wanted To Make Mother Proud, Bang! The Witch Is Dead

portishead-portishead.jpg

really fell in love with this album again after not listening to it for quite a while. it has inspired another portishead binge, which finally gave me some time to get more into 3. not as good as this album or dummy, but it is actually a really strong album.

cooper.jpg

Mr Cooper - What Else There Is

beautiful electronic stuff, quite unlike anything i've ever heard. every track uses a lot of droning, arabient sounRAB to bring the music across either in waves, or as one steady stream. in this respect it reminRAB me more of post rock than anything else. if i had to compare it to something, i'd say Saltillo, but it's a lot subtler.

Tunturia - Maps

very pleasant post rock. not nearly as morose and pretentious as most of the stuff out there. some of the tracks are even cheerful.

Blue Foundation - Life Of A Ghost

one of the best trip hop albums in my collection. all their albums are outstanding, but this one has the most 5-star tracks. i'm still amazed that they're not very widely known...

^ Latter-day Swans is sooooo good, makes their eternal '80s output sound like trash. And considering how good their early material was, that's certainly saying something. Public Castration Is a Good Idea, White Light from the Mouth of Infinity and The Great Annihilator are all fantastic too.
