I think Paul Dano should have at least received a Best Supporing Actor nomination for his amazing performance as Eli Sunday in "There Will Be Blood". If he had been nominated I think he would have beaten Javier Bardem. I liked his performance as well, just to be clear.

I'm actually thrilled about this. As much as I liked Hairspray, there were better films and better performances then Nikki Blonsky. But that's just my opinion.

I must say... After I saw American Gangster, I turned to my boyfriend and said "Ruby Dee is getting an Oscar nomination." This is the second year in a row I called one out like this. Last year it was Mark Wahlberg

I'm kind of surprised by some of the nominees. Here are my opinions on the nominees

No Tim Burton? He's never been nominated in the directing category and I thought that this was going to be his time!

I see that Tommy Lee Jones gathered up the sentimental vote for In The Valley of Elah.

I don't know why Cate Blanchett was nominated for Elizabeth: The Golden Age but I'm thrilled that Ellen Paige and Laura Linney weren't over looked.

Very surprised about Jason Reitman but so freaking happy he got a directing nom!

Julian Schnabel... He didn't want his film to go in the foreign film category because he's American... Big mistake!

What is Surf's Up doing there?????

My sadness though, goes to Helena Bonham Carter who didn't score a nomination for Sweeney Todd. I was also pulling for Jennifer Garner for her performance in Juno. :(

And Hal Holbrook, as good as he is in Into The Wild, more deserving people were overlooked ie: Paul Dano for There Will Be Blood and even Michael Cera and J.K. Simmon's for Juno.

I haven't seen any of the foreign film nominations either mukooh

Can't wait to see Amy Adams singing up on stage for the Enchanted songs :D

Surprised there weren't more Atonement nominations!

Now these are just my opinions and they aren't meant to bash or attack anyone else's. Can't wait to see other's opinions :)

It's very upsetting!

OMG, Marion Cotillard (sp?) I wasn't expecting her to win but wow, I'm really happy for her. I loved her in "Jeux d' enfant" and she was good in "A good Year." How cute was she????

Eh so anti climactic...

Daniel won and deservedly so.

No Country winning. Ugh disappointment. Why is it that the better film always wins the globe and loses the Oscar? Huh. Great film but both Atonement and TWBB were better because they left a significant impact.

Marion was my highlight and I was rooting for her hardcore! :yay: I screamed so loud when she won! Adorable and completely deserved! She was amazing in LVER. :thud:

Jon Stewart is so not funny. I've always hated him. I wish Ellen hosted.

WTF to Bourne winning all those awards? That film was not good and the camera work made me dizzy (they even used that crazy ever moving camera during a scene sitting at a table! )

Atonement losing Cinematographgy? despicable. Though TWBB was deserving Atonement was the best.

Tilda freakin' Swinton? You've got to big kidding me? It should have been Amy Ryan! or atleast Cate!

Ugh to Juno winning orig script like i knew it would. I guess pretension does get you somewhere. The dialogue was just plan lame and the storyline was so simplistic.

No Country over Atonement for script? If anything winning over Atone it should have been There Will Be Blood. Atonement got ripped. No one believed that book could ever be made into a film.

Coens winning for direction. Their body of work made them deserving for sure. I was however rooting for PTA. Im still bitter Joe was snubbed.

Atleast Atonement won Best Score!

Transformers losing to the golden compass that had to be the biggest glaring shock and ridiculous choice! Transformers was the best SFX I've ever seen! Just brilliant. Those Polar bears in GC do not look real! All the FX look just terrible in the ad. ugh!

The song people were cute. I was happy for them.

Very depressing evening for me and I knew it would be. My films always get ripped. But atleast nothing tonight was as bad as BBM losing to of all films that pretentious and ridiculous waste of celluloid 'Crash'.

Sorry for this long diatribe.

But "Away from her" did exactly the same thing from past to present and so on ... ;) the time between past and present are maybe shorter in "Away from her" but it's the same principle of putting the movie together ... a fact not a feeling ;)

I've also seen the two movies and as far as best actress in a leading character are concerned, what matters 1st is their performance the movie whether it's the best or not is secondary on that vote I mean (the best actress or actor one).
Second, as good as Julie Christie's performance is I feel so much more watching Gordon Pinsent in Away from her and between her and Marion Cotillard in "La vie en rose" no matter what one made me cry all the tears I can cry and the other just made me feel for her case ... guess who ? And for me the one who made you feel the most is the best !

Indeed!

Dude, Heath. :( Can't help but tear up... I'm not sobbing because my niece is in front of me talking and talking and talking and talking.

But no Brad Renfro?

I couldn't believe that Hairspray got snubbed

I wasn't expecting any in the major catergories

but the costumes were beautiful.

and Come So Far not getting the nom. for best song was very upsetting to me. I love that song.

like I'm happy for Enchanted but I don't think Happy Working Song should have gotten in....or that song from August Rush.

:(

Yeah, since Cate Blanchett has been nominated for both Supporting and Best Actress I have a feeling she'd win for I'm Not There and that will cancel out her nomination for the Best Actress category.

I was rooting for her too.

I thought Cate had it locked. But, I was thinking Ruby Dee or Amy Ryan might sneak in. Never guessed Tilda would get it.

I wish Amy had sang That's How You Know also.

Nikki - I know. I'm surprised at how quick they're playing the music. Give people a chance to say what they need/want to say.

random thoughts on 'away from her' and julie christie's performance in that movie....i'm still convinced that she's given the best performance of the year in any film..granted what makes her performance so good and compliments it is the performance by gordon pinset.....whose almost 80 years of age.....as others have said, and looking back on the film, i'm now in complete agreement thatg he should have at least been given an oscar nomination for that performance...

i too enjoyed the performance of marion cottilard as "the little sparrow" in 'la vie en rose' (i've saw both of these films in a theater)...it's great acting, unfortunately i didn't really care for the way the film was put together....with the time travelling, from the present to past and then back again...i thought that took away from the movie...i think that if it had just concentrated on one period of time it would have been a better film...

the other day i was talking to one of my closest friends..... she really liked 'la vie en rose' along with the performance by marion cottilard...then we got to talking about marion cottilard's and jullie christie's nominations in the best actress category at this year's academy awards...she mentioned that julie christie already had a best actress oscar for 'darling'....which is true....but then i mentioned that daniel day-lewis already had a best actor oscar for his performance in 'my left foot'....so i guess, at least to my way of thinking, it shouldn't really matter if an actor or actress should win another oscar in the same category that they won in before...

with all this being said i'm still convinced that julie christie will win the best actress oscar at this year's academy awards....call it a gut feeling, but alot of it is felt in the heart as well...

I was happy too that they brought out that girl too. that was sooo nice of jon stewart.

I am sorry that wasn't right that they left out brad renfro in the memoriams.

Jon sucked. The Titler joke was so not funny.

So happy for Marion and the make up dept. and Tilda Swinton. What an awesome speech. Haven't seen Marion's yet :P

This year's show was kinda dull. John Stewart wasn't that funny. The only thing I liked about him tonight was that he let that girl that won Best Song for Once give her speech. Tilda Swinton and Marion Cotillard winning surprised me. I can't believe Transformers didn't win visual effects.

I hope Johnny Depp or Viggo Mortensen gets the Oscar, they were simply wonderful.
And if Marion Cotillard doesn't get the statue i'm going to kill somebody. But she's not American..so yeah.
I want Saorise to win for Supporting actress, but since C.Blanchett is nominated for EVERYTHING she's in i'm losing hope :(.
I'm so sad that they snubbed "The simpsons movie" :/ .

Johnnt deserves every oscar he was nominated for ever!! i was so mad tim burton wasn't nominated!

I loved Marions acceptance speech, absoloutely beautiful!

Im still annoyed Tim Burton wanst even nominated, I kept hoping theyd suddenly realise he deserves it more than anyone and give him the award.

One of the days, one of these days, Johnny will finally get an oscar or the thousand he truly deserves!

Halle Berry and Judi Dench were very funny, so were Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway.

Casey Affleck plays the character of Robert Ford, or 'The Coward' Robert Ford. I hope it does win for cinematography aswell. It's a stunning piece of filmmaking.

NCFOM has got to be a frontrunner for Best Directing and Best Picture now... and of course Best Supporting Actor, we all knew that already. And I heard about Daniel Day-Lewis' speech. What a great man.
