random thoughts...going nowhere and ending nowhere...

in the best actor category...tommy lee jones for 'for the valley of elah'....imo i thought he gave a much better performance in this film than in 'no country for old men'.......his face is so expressive conveying emotions and feelings that in 'the valley of elah' there are so many instances and scenes where there's very little or nothing said by his character...that you know just by looking at his face and his body actions what he is feeling and thinking......sad to say every other actor in this category, including tommy, is going against daniel day-lewis....and this year the golden boy is going to be his alone...

'the valley of elah' is not a perfect film, but a good film never the less given the performances by tommy lee jones and susan sarandon...i thought the last minute or two of the film was kind of heavy handed...and should have been handled differently given the nature of tommy lee jones' patriotic character.....

[sp]at the end of the film tommy lee jones' character takes the tatterred american flag that his murdered son brought back from iraq and hosts it up a school yard flag pole upside down, as in the sign of distress.....to me that scene would have worked alot better if he had just flown the flag the way it was suppose to be....[/sp]

i would have loved to have seen 'le scaphandre et le papillon' (aka the diving bell and the butterfly) nominated in the best foreign film category....i'm not quite sure what's up with julian schnabel's recent comments about not wanting the film put in that category....according to an interview with the director, in the los angeles times calendar section, dated december 22 2007...the reason given for it not being nominated was...

"And though the movie was made in French, with a French cast (and was Golden Globe-nominated as best foreign-language film), it is ineligible for best foreign-language film at the Oscars because its screenwriter is British and two of its producers are American."

that makes more sense....another arcane rule that the academy goes by..is julian schnabel just hoping to gather more votes, through sympathy, from the other members of the academy who are lucky enough to vote in that category??....(remember director's are the only ones allowed to vote in this category)....if he's hoping to generate votes through sympathy...i'm afraid that he's going to find he's not going to get the director's oscar that way, because the competions too tough this year for him to overcome.....

The Oscar's get it wrong a lot but then make it up to the actor at a later time: Normally for performances that aren't their greatest. A prime example is Al Pacino who had been nominated for 8 Oscars when he finally won... For Scent of a Women in 1993???? The poor guy was, it was bad timing for most of them: He lost to Jack Nicholson (One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest), Jackie Lemmon (Save the Tiger), Dustin Hoffman (Kramer vs. Kramer) and Joe Pesci (Goodfellas). I'll never get over him losing to Art Carney and Joel Grey though... He should have won for The Godfather but Joel won for Caberet and he should have won for The Godfather: Part II but lost to Art for Harry and Tonto.

So I guess the point I'm trying to get at... Johnny Depp will win an Oscar within the next 10 or so years. It may not be for a role that deserved it, but they'll give it to him because he's owed it.

I haven't had the pleasure to see Marion's movie yet, but by all accounts she was fantastic.

She was adorable and refreshing reacting to her win.

how could Transformers lose to Golden Compass? If it were POTC I would be less surprised, but Golden Compass was the least visually impressive of the 3. Transformers was able to blend the real environments with cgi characters well also without overdoing the cgi. for example the bus scene with Bonecrusher. real bus explosion with cgi character added afterwards, and the whole scene blended very well!

wtf!! ah well.

I'm a little sad that Keri Russell didn't get a nomination. I thought she was great in Waitress.

But I'm excited for Ellen Page and Ruby Dee.

Seriously! It was kind of low, but ehhh.

They should've had a clip of BBM for Heath. I think they didn't want people to lose it, though. Which probably would've happened had they shown a clip from Heath's movies.

Yay for Sweeney Todd, and uhh I wanted POTC to win.

Jon Stewart is off somehow, but I'm liking it. His Cate Blanchett joke was pretty funny.

Did anyone catch Oprah today? She did a whole show about the Oscar nominees. I only saw a few minutes, sort of caught it right in the middle.

im very disappointed in the noms

most notably Joe Wright snubbed for director which is an absolute outrage

and James and Keira snubbed for Atonement especially over George Clooney and Laura Linney two terrible actors imo...

I was disapointed they did not mention either Brad Renfro or Roy Scheider among those people who had died. Scheider is part of movie history with Jaws and Renfro died before Ledger. So even if there was a cut off and Scheider didn't get on, Renfro should be on there.

I was very happy for Tilda Swinton getting an Oscar for her performance in "Michael Clayton." I haven't seen the movie, but knowing her from previous works this was long overdue IMO.

I did see "No Country For Old Men" & I thought Javier Bardem was excellent.

It wasn't a shock that No Country No Men nabbed its for awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor.

However, I do feel that Amy Ryan got robbed. She really was great in her role in Gone Baby Gone.

Josh Brolin and James McAvoy - funny! And those Superbad guys - funny too! Love those things they all said!

Amy Adams was adorable. I was singing with her when she sang "Happy Working Song". :sigh:

Of course there is no justice in the Oscar world. There are a lot of times that people get the Oscar when others get robbed. Though I still love watching the oscars even though they have gotten less exciting in later years. I did like how they show who got the oscars way back when.

God, are they trying to make this year's awards ceremony more boring then past awards.

Denzel Washington was snubbed... and Juno (while I loved the movie to tears) I feel will also be snubbed. And I'm surprised Keira Knightly and James McAvoy... with all that buzz, were also completely snubbed. And no offense to Johnny Depp fans, but I always feel like if he does a movie...automatic nomination these days.

I'd like to say "yay or Ellen Page" but, it's pretty obvious for this movie, the most she'll get is a nomination. :pout:

I loved how Forest kept hugging her and walked/held her as she was walking off stage, whispering to her. Oh, and Cate Blanchet's reaction, she definitely wanted Marion to win. :D

Beautiful.

Truly, and the "banter" is crappy this year so let the people who win have their say. Eh. lol

I'm happy for her too. I thought Forest Whitaker was going to have to hold her, and he practically carried her away after she finished her speech. How great. :sigh: I bet she could hardly feel her knees! What a moment that must be.
