70's British Horror.

Funny you should mention this! I had a vague recollection lately of a scary show I watched as a kid. I could remember the music that featured - like a 50's pop tune "Shakin' All Over" or something, but couldn't remember the show, even though it frightened me half to death as a kid! Of course, after some deft Googling, it turned out to be Black Carrion from Hammer House Of Mystery And Suspense.

Trying to get these DVD's is an absolute joke. I cannot find any combination of volumes for a reasonable price. Does anyone here know if it's getting a DVD re-release or anything. What a shame to see a great show get lost on eBay.

Also been catching up with Hammer's Dracula run as they're so cheap at the mo. Watched Dracula Has Risen From The Grave last night. Bit derivative, but it's lovely to look at (in spite of the crazy filters threatening to ruin things), and a terrific performance from Ewan Hooper as the priest. I think I've managed to buy most of them, though I can't find the Satanic Rites of Dracula at the mo.

I did say in my post above it's not a seventies film. ;)

Yes - PLAY would normally list it as SOLD OUT!.

But its not on Amazon either.

You should be able to get the US release dirt cheap although I recall seeing the R2 on Ebay for about a fiver

:D

Torture Garden is available at Play.com for a fiver if anyone here is interested. I've just picked it up as I don't think I've ever seen it before. Some mixed reviews online, but sounRAB better than Dr. Terror's, so hopefully worth a punt. :)

Noticed a new version of Vault of Horror is out too. Apparently though, it's exactly the same as the Vipco disc in every way. So I'll stick with that until someone bothers to do a new cleaned up version.

I just found on youtube some clips from the movie House of Whipcord, which was a Pete Walker/David McGillivray opus about a deranged couple who set up a house of correction for young girls

The two of them also collaborated on the movies House of Mortal Sin and Frightmare, which I doubt have ever been shown on TV unfortunately. Frightmare has Sheila Keith as a cannibal!

I recorded it from BBC1 in the early 80's but wiped it years ago.

Imagine my joy when I found out it was available to buy on R4.

My fave is still the time travel adventure in the first story although its miles off being classed as a horror story

I have Torture Garden on DVD, too. :D Rather underrated I think.

I like all the UK horror compendiums. Tales That Witness Madness is supposed to be at the bottom of the critical pile, but I like it. :D

I love many of those movies listed here despite not being born when they were made.

I actually find Asylum one of the most underrated horrors of all time.In one way because of the fact it had a rather bleak, slightly uncommon ending (unusually nihilisitic for a British horror).

But I find the 'Lucy Comes To Stay' segment highly influential because of that twist ending which was uncommon at the time also but now a cliche in itself.

Paranoic (on the R1 set of 8 Hammer films) is a bit of a clone of most other Hammer psychological thrillers.
Strange to think that on those BBC2 seasons the Hammer film was the modern gory one held back until later.

Legend of the Werewolf was a Tyburn film and a dvd is long overdue.

Not seen it on tv for a while unlike its mate The Ghoul that I had to record off BBC1

Asylum is another of my favourite horrors from that era. I particularly liked the ending! But, I think that one of the main reasons for liking it is the great cast. Herbert Lom is just wonderful!

I used to like those cheap Brit second features that cinemas would tag on to the latest 1970's Hollywood busterblock ( yes folks you got a full 4 hour show for your admission price )

I recal one with Rod Stieger as a Sales Rep driving the motorways of England in a Ford Granada .

Another Brit thriller starred an aging Sterling Hayden plus one of John Mills' daughters ( or was it one of the sexy Geeson sisters ? ) in an effective slasher-nutter-escaped from-the-looney-bin whodunnit.

Are there any fans?
I am talking about films such as the Dracula movies, Dr Terrors House Of Horrors, The House That Dripped Blood and Asylum. And of course many other great films of that era!

Vincent Price was a legend!

I love the hammy Hammer films. Was Theatre of Blood a Hammer film? I always remember the camp critic being choked to death by a pie made from his darling poodles!!

I just did a google and saw that creepy kiRAB face on the poster!!:cry: I'll sleep with the lights on tonight I think.

I saw it years ago and the final chapter gave me nightmares for weeks.

If you get hold of a copy could you give us a quick review once you've watched it. If it's as good as I remember I might get me a copy.

Which was the one which consisted of a few short stories, one of which starred Roy Castle, basically playing himself as a jazz trumpeter, but falling foul of voodoo (if I remember rightly) ?

I always get mixed up between Legend Of The Werewolf and The Beast Must Die. One has some upper-class type people in a 'whodunnit' type scenario as to who the Werewolf is, including a very strikingly beautiful black lady, and the other starts off in some kind of Parisian-slum-travelling-freak-show type thing. Though I saw both on the BBC between the mid to late 90s.

other i love watching are:

Curse Of The Crimson Alter
The Sorcerers
Horror Hotel
Twins Of Evil
Theatre Of Death
The Skull
Nothing But The Night
Torture Garden - with Jack Palance and Bergess Meredith
Captain Kronos
Night Of The Big Heat
The Devil Rides Out
Horror Hospital
Satans Slave
The Witches
Circus Of Horrors
Night Of The Demon
Frankenstein the true story
The Ghost Train
The Virgin Witch
The Reptile
Vampyres
Village Of The Damned
Children Of The Damned

ThreaRAB like this are incredibly handy to list horror films,so people can find ones they never knew of.
