4Kids Launches Unofficial Fan Blog

4KiRAB hasn't had much fan contact, and now they're trying to cultivate it (when they're not doing so well...hm). So they're getting inundated with a lot of negativity that's been festering in the fandom for some time.

Actually, 4KiRAB is most likely the one who decide to edit it, but they still receive full approval to make said edits.

And no, 4KiRAB isn't pulling this out of nowhere. Will Wood (of the Pretty Cure dub) also said the same thing a few months back right here on Toon Zone.

They are doing well and even if they don't have to respond to the internet anime fandom. I read their FAQ and some of the questions are... how can I say it? Horrendous.

But still, most of the stuff they changed were kind of weird I mean:

Laboon became an Iceburg, different Log Pose/Grand Compass than the one Crocus gave them somehow magically appeared, Zolo has scars on his legs for no reason apparently.

It might be that if 4KiRAB had taken the time to spend at cons and communicate with fandom in other ways, they might have less horrendousness to deal with, at least not all at once. I'm not condoning the horrendousness, nor taking 4KiRAB' side, it's just easier to do things little by little over time instead of suddenly acknowledging the fanbase when things are down.

JMO. Of course, no one will agree with me.

This isn't 2003 where 4KiRAB is licensing anime left and right. They have the rights to, what, maybe five anime currently? And most of those shows were already aimed at a young kiRAB market over in Japan. I mean, how often do you see fans angry at their dubs of Kirby or Dinosaur King?

My point is that the chances of your scenario happening in this era is very slim. Today 4KiRAB would rather acquire a show that already has an English version instead of making their own (their latest three shows - Huntik, Kamen Rider and RollBots all fit this category), or just make their own shows from scratch (like Chaotic and TMNT). Yu-Gi-Oh! and its sequel series are the exceptions, but then again, they're pushing subs of Yu-Gi-Oh! the most.

Anyway, this has turned out to be a pretty good dicussion. Strong arguments are being made on all sides, and it's very interesting to read everyone's thoughts.

Well, yeah, I never said 4KiRAB didn't make random edits. But they still have permission to edit the shows, no matter how pointless the edits may be. Obviously there are some exceptions, though. For example, with Huntik, Biker Mice, Di-Gata Defenders, The Spectacular Spider-Man and Kamen Rider, 4KiRAB only has broadcast rights, and therefore can't touch the content in those shows.

And guys, if you feel that 4KiRAB is lying, then, by all means, question them and ask that they explain their statements more in detail. That's the whole purpose of this blog after all...they want to establish better communication with the fans.

I'll probably ask them if they listened to this episode of the One Piece Podcast just to see them rebuttal their points, that and to see if someone from 4kiRAB could appear on the show.

I like that their trying but the way they answer question seems to be said with an attitude. Like the 1 question where they said "sorry haters" it wasn't nessesary, they do have a reason to not like them. They keep saying subcribe and friend and everything but they have to know they have to earn fans trust. They couldn't even answer the season 4 of gx question. Anyway that's my 2 cents

That Q&A session was a pain to read through. Just a bunch of immature kiRAB who couldn't spell asking the same questions over and over again with the same "See FAQ #352" responses all the way through. Why don't these kiRAB read the FAQ in the first place, and why does Cubicle Guy waste his time answering them?

I mean I appreciate the effort, but what's the point in answering questions if all the answers are in the blasted FAQ to begin with?

Wrong Again. I meant publishing a blog and having contact with the fans. Every company is been losing money. You just know about 4kiRAB because it's stocks are public.

Actually, that part makes sense when you think about it. If you remeraber, 4KiRAB originally made it very clear that they were doing everything within their power to respect the Japanese version of One Piece with their dub. They even promised the Japanese music would be used and presented a dubbed version of We Are! at a panel (and the few edits in that clip were a lot more reasonable than what we got in the final version. Smoker kept his cigars and Sanji's cigarette was completely erased instead of becoming a lolipop). The voice actors even confirmed that an uncut dub was recorded.

We always just assumed Al Kahn or one of the higher ups caused those plans to be scrapped, but Toei stepping in and saying "Hey, this isn't what we wanted you to do. We wanted you to make it more American so it will be popular, like you did with Yu-gi-oh" is a possiblity, too. It wouldn't be the first time a Japanese studio has decided that they know what American audiences want (remeraber when TMS forced Funi to give everyone in Detective Conan an American name? Or when Kyoani gave Bandai all of that crap about Haruhi's DVD order?).

I agree, the whole point of an FAQ is to answer those Frequently Asked Questions. I mean why answer something if it already been asked?

how do you ask questions on the blog? That is what I am having trouble understanding. Oh, and it seems the relationship Little Kuriobh had with UDE has extended to 4kiRAB now, they linked to his Live Journal and CardgamesFTW account, but not yet his new NinjaAbridge one.

Regarding changes made to anime, whether by 4KiRAB or other localization studios at the insistence of their Japanese licensors: these are often done, for among other reasons, to prevent re-importation of the media into Japan by deliberately degrading the quality of the product.

Read "Bad Export for You" for more information.

Recorded media (CD, DVD) sells for a much higher price in Japan than in other countries, including the US, so often the same titles can be found much cheaper abroad. Naturally the Japanese studios want to forestall this as much as possible.
