Im sure the plants were aquarium plants and not terrarium plants, because aquarium plants would have not killed your fish....
decaying plant wont harm live fish...it happens in nature too.
I'm stumped too about what happened to your fish of two years.
If the water quality was poor for the first...
They live nicely with angles...
....The Ram is my fav, I keep 4 with 2 gold angles and 4 small kribs
They do require running room, and pots or arears to retreat...the male Ram is not alway friendly to his mates.
Answer to Add: you just described my kitchen tank--angles, swords, guppies, tetras...
I hear my cat fish running around and splashing water at night...
In my 150, I hear my Tin Foil barbs and Sharks moving quick enough to knock this over or hit the glass...
Get at least a 20g..a 10g is may be too small if you want to increase the size of your community a 20/29g will allow you to to add a few more fish and plants as your hobby grows...
And adding the fish over time is exactly right...
Are you using warm enough water...keeping the temp close to what your removing?
....But no don't remove the fish for a WC only to put them back in the original tank...that will for sure increase the stress...drop some aquarium salt or stress coat during the change.
Keep an eye on that baby gourami...they grow to be nippers.
What about a few platies or guppies...
But with the gourami the guppy could be in jeopardy.
It's the rams...
You do know they are cichlids...although they are less aggressive than other cichlids...they are not the social butterfly
I keep mine with other "slightly bully" fish---angles and kribs, I've never tried to keep them with Tetras
Planaria worms are tiny, thin, milky white, parasitic worms which can appear in tanks that are overfed and when ammonia levels rise
