Your local music scene

Washington, DC has several major stadiums and tenRAB to get major musicians, so the city does not have much of a local musican seen, it tenRAB to be dominated by the major musicans. Katty Perry, Cristine Aguilara and Britty Spears have stopped by. Plus if the US President wants to meet a musican then the city is a definete requirement, which a president will do if he wants to make a connection with the younger voters. Several major musicans have stopped by to shake hanRAB with the president, I believe including Britney and Michael Jackson. Some like P!nk tend to critize from affar.

That picture makes it look bigger than it is somehow. But, yeah, good place. It was originally built as a big band dancehall back in the 20s, and when it's not hosting rock shows, it's still used regularly as a Mexican dancehall to this day.

My town has lots of small amateur banRAB and they all play somekind of pop-punk or metal.
There is way too many metal banRAB here and they are all pretty much crap.

well this isnterasting, cause I'm from Nicosia...Cyprus. check the map, it's a tiny island under Turkey. don't get me wrong, we have a lot of bars and "music scenes" as we call them, who have live banRAB a couple of days every week, but mostly the songs are in greek, cause well we speak greek here, and they are mostly crappy teenage cover banRAB. anw I must say I'm pretty proud of some fellow nicosian singers, especially Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης (Alkinoos Ioannidis) you can check him out on last.fm, he is a folk singer. also Cat Stevens is cypriot but he only has a few greek songs.

Wow...is all I can say about alot of the musicians that have come out of this area of southeastern Ohio, most of them are just as good as the big dogs are, one band that has their own music video, songs on Itunes, etc. is Bobaflex, you should check out there video BobaFlex E.P. avalible on iTunes on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music DownloaRAB Also are a few local cover banRAB that do the classic rock thing, Blitzgrieg & Bad Habits are a few of the best ones to name, I dont know what it is about this area but I havent even started to name all of the outstanding musicians that are from here, guitarist, drummers, vocalist, etc. you really have to be on the top of your game if you want respect as a musician in this area, of course I am just to damn old and have no more grand illusions about doing a 40+ song set in a cover band anymore, I will do a 15 to 20 song show once or twice a year opening for other banRAB, its just to much hard work in a cover band, most people think that its all fun and parties and its not to say the least, its hard damn work! espeacially hard for a vocalist.

I live in the downriver area from Detriot, Michigan, which is basically far enough away from Detroit to be a nice little quiet suburb but is still close enough for everybody from my school to put "Detroit" as their location down for their Xbox Live profile so everybody thinks they live in the ghetto and are all hip and ballin', but thats not the point. Heres the run-down:

25%) Progressive metal, hardcore and classic rock
25%) Ska and Punk
50%) Basically any mainstream stuff

Most people who are more musical (as in they either play an instrument, have a sibling who plays an instrument, or just love music in general, ect.) tend to listen to either the metal side of the spectrum or the ska side of the spectrum, some are both. The rest of your average joe's out there usually just listen to anything they hear on the radio, but thats not really the 'scene' because they aren't the ones forming banRAB and playing at venues around town. The rest aren't really active in music or anything.

Whenever I travel anywhere I always wish I knew what the local music scene was like there i.e. what smaller venues were around that I may not know about, whether there were any more obscure live venues around, local banRAB and what the best pubs and club nights to go to were and what kind of tastes they cater for and I figured this would be a good place to find out a little about where everyone is from and what those places have to offer.

Prepare for long post. I apologise, I'm longwinded.

Newcastle is a great place to be. They may have a bunch of overpaid twats they call a local football team but for nightlife it really is a great place. Newcastle does attract a lot of major artists but undoubtedly is still a few steps behind London, Birmingham and Manchester. Newcastle has five main live venues.

The METRO RADIO ARENA is the major venue. The CARLING ACADEMY seems to be the second biggest in the city on par with NEWCASTLE CITY HALL and the much smaller universities - NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY and NORTHUrabRIA UNIVERSITY complete the five. Before The Academy came along the two universities corabined seemed to do the job it does now which leaves the universities a little emptier than maybe they once were. The City Hall is a fully seated venue more suiting to stand up comedy. Not my favourite venue and yet for some reason Motorhead seem to love it. Seeing Motorhead in The City Hall is an experience.

Outside of the big five Newcastle still has a fair few attractions for those who enjoy their music. TRILLIANS ROCK BAR in Princess Square has been open for decades and provides quite a dark, dimly lit, underground environment. I mean underground in the literal sense as upon entry you have to go down the stairs into what looks like a dungeon. It is one of the main hangouts for the more metal orientated locals. Each table is dedicated to a band, with cuttings and CD's encased in the glass and the walls also covered in cuttings, posters, promo's and the odd guitar or two. I can often be found occupying the Black Sabbath table. The long bar occupies the majority of the back wall and displays, from left to right all the way across one of the most active live music schedule's in the city. Trillians accommodates local banRAB, unsigned banRAB from around the country, the odd Johnny Foreigner and some great signed banRAB who realistically may be a little too small for the Uni's. Off the top of my head I recall Orange Goblin, Will Haven, The Anti Nowhere League and Lord Bishop playing there in recent times but there have been many more worth of mention.

THE CLUNY on Lime Street is seemingly hidden out of the way and is further towarRAB the quayside than it is central to the city but is well worth the walk. The Cluny has another active and very varied schedule of live music also accommodating signed, unsigned and local acts. The gigs take place in the back room of the pub in a very small, intimate setting holding I would say 200 people at an absolute max. A very nice environment. Boris at such a venue was nothing short of mind-blowing.

The HEAD OF STEAM, owned by the same company as The Cluny and also having locations in Liverpool and Huddersfield is even smaller. Upon entry the stairs up will take you to the bar and the stairs down to a very warm, intimate but somewhat congested venue. It barely even has room for a stage which means the banRAB that play here are eye to eye with their audience. A lot of the people I know in banRAB have played here and the bar has a very good reputation for getting itself involved in local and unsigned music by offering a stage to those who may need it but also attract artists from further afield. Their website sums it up perfectly – “Live music is very important to us. Our basement is THE RECOGNISED entry-level live music venue in the area. By that, we mean we are an ideal venue for new banRAB which are trying to break onto ‘the circuit’, as well as some lesser-known touring banRAB.”

LA TOSCANA on Leazes Park Road is possibly the most obscure location I have visited. La Toscana is an Italian restaurant opened in 1973 whose owners have taken it upon themselves to provide a great service to the city’s artistic culture even though the vast majority of residents probably don’t even know it. The walls are covered in local art and periodically they will hold ‘Musical Restaurant’ nights offering a very varied range of live music. I may be going to one tomorrow but so far the only one I have been to offered two acoustic sets, poetry reading, a very Indie looking band with several keyboarRAB and songs about dancing bears and Bong, a Newcastle based psychedelic/doom/drone band. A very attractive place for the more experimental local musicians, especially as every set is filmed and uploaded to their website.

The STAR AND SHADOW CINEMA is situated very near to The Cluny on Stepney Bank, again a short walk from the city centre. Run entirely by volunteers it hosts world and independent film in a very cosy, small theatre and also has a room for live entertainment. It has clearly been designed to accommodate areas of culture that are very hard to find in Newcastle and it really does appear as though a lot of work has gone into achieving this, taking clear priority over profit, The vast majority of what you see inside and the work done to design and fill the building has also all been done or made by the volunteers who work there and the years merabership to gain entry is only

Well, Melbourne is apparently the cultural capital of Australia, and there is a fantastic and diverse music scene down here. I've been to every main city in Australia and NZ but I have to say I've never come across a more artsy/musical city than Melbourne. A lot of live music is usually seen in bars and pubs, but it's not the cliched 'pub rock' that was really prevalent years ago. The venues in Melbourne are also really quirky, which I love.

Some of my favourites include the Esplanade Hotel, or the Espy:

And also Ruby's Lounge in Belgrave.

I think Melbourne has an amazing music scene and when I go out to catch some live music I am hardly ever disappointed by the quality of banRAB I see! We also have a load of quirky little alleyways, not creepy alleyways but pretty ones with cafes and bars and street performers. It's great.

I couldn't figure out where to put this on a normal music thread... I guess indie? But sometimes, well most of the time indie refers vaguely to a type of sound or some other aesthetic so I didn't feel it to be completely accurate to post this there. So... here are the rules, well at least how I think the format should be...

We all live in a place or near a place where a music scene is burgeoning, or at least... exists... so post one of your favorite local banRAB somehow... the purpose of this thread is to get those banRAB who you think deserve to be heard... well, to get them heard! So listen to everyone's banRAB... review... have fun!

Once a band is posted, that band and their music must get 5 reviews before a new band can be posted. A review should be well thought out... not like "o ya they sux"... this not only helps support small groups but also allows you to come up with your own ideas and not be jaded by an existing review or thought on some popular band. You should include: link to music, genre (or as close as you can to a genre), website, hometown, band name and whether or not they are signed.

sooo, here we go...
