Your local music scene

Portland, OR.
Whatever it is that you're into, there are enough people here doing it (and subsequently enough people doing it badly) that it gets annoying if you're paying too much attention.
That said, though, there is something nice about living in a city where you can choose between, say, a well-known arena-rock band, an underground folk-country band, authentic Indian traditional music and, hand-to-God, Klingon metal all on the same night.

I miss it. DC has a crazy music scene. There was a good amount of indie pop banRAB similar to AC and that sound, lots of experimental electronic type stuff (more in the vein of Melt-Banana, straight up experimental music is huge in Maryland), dream pop, and I hear a massive rap/hip hop scene that I never saw too much of. There's a lot of alternative rock banRAB popping up everywhere, good and bad. And of course, it wouldn't be DC without the punk and post hardcore artists.

As for my current local music scene, well... that doesn't exist. But if all goes as planned, I'll be stationed about half an hour from Seattle after this :D Sub Pop and ****loaRAB of indie rock come to mind when I think of Seattle, it should be amazing if I make it there.

Chicago has had an amazing music scene for ages. Historically it was home home to tons of jazz and blues, in the more recent past you have things like house music and the whole Wax Trax scene of the late 80s/early 90s. When I lived there in 2001-2006 I was consistently amazed by the incredibly wide variety of music coming out of there, everything from bluegrass to indie to electronica to flamenco to metal to punk to hip-hop to circuit bending. I should also point out that in the past few years it's also been home to Lollapalooza, the Pitchfork music festival and Intonation, not to mention well-known and long running annual festivals like Bluesfest and Jazzfest. Basically, if you can't find good music in Chicago you aren't looking.

^Thanks to you I just decided to check out one of my favorite little banRAB from Portland, the Builders and the Butchers and discovered they will be in my state in July!

TORONTO: The best local band I've witnessed are The Sisters Euclid, who play in the Orbit Room every Monday (they have been for the past decade). They're a blues-rock band who mix up their sets with different instruments and guest singers. I wished I could see them every Monday night. The weekend doesn't end until Tuesday comes for me when I do.

My favorite local act in Connecticut is a young kid who performs and recorRAB under the name "sadnes"

He uses guitar and a Nintendo Entertainment System to produce really awesome lo-fi electronic sounRAB. Check out his facebook

In Louisiana, as far as electronic is concerned, most of the clubs around here are big on Electro House. Seems to be the trend as of late, although you can still find Drum & Bass, but its mostly been taken over by Dubstep.
I haven't heard breaks blow up since I lived in Florida about 8 years ago.

Metal always stays a mainstay in certain Louisiana niche. Rarely hear punk anything anymore. Mainstream alternative is pretty much a regular in your every-day bars and all that.

Indie seems to have taken off a lot with locals... a lot of unknown acts coming out and doing stuff in that area. They usually do their thing at bars that have open mic nights.

HipHop will always be HipHop. Never died down, just changed. But most of your regular joes listen to that horrid club shit.

Everything else is in pockets and bursts.
Aside from the obvious mainstream stuff, which is listened to by virtue of it being mainstream and all, it's really a matter of being in the right place as far as what's dominant. I sorta like that, because it's more than just a single character about the place you live. It's multi-dimensional. I like exploring that more.

When referring to a music scene in Myrtle Beach, it's more of a "lack thereof" situation. I've been playing music in this town for almost 13 years, and I've seen a lot of banRAB of all genres come and go. It's not really the people's fault, either. Well, partially it is.

Myrtle Beach isn't really set up physically to be the kind of place where young people can walk around, exchange ideas and create an artistic identity. Myrtle Beach and it's suburbs are kind of like one moderately-sized city stretched out over about 20 miles of coastline. There's not really a center. There is a five points district, but it's tiny and only has a couple of clubs that are worth playing, and they're both small (50-200 people).

The people who will never give up on the scene are the little hope that the local scene has, and there are a lot of people who I respect and love here, but they are not the majority. The majority of people in Myrtle Beach are, for lack of better worRAB, "preppies" or "fashion whores". Canned music dance clubs are what's bigger here. It's basically disco town; get drunk, buy shit and fuck strange ass. If that's what you're into, I don't give a shit, but I'm looking for something more, and that's basically why we're packing up our gear and heading out west the Austin, Texas.

well I was expecting merabers from the uk to know where it is, but this is cool. I've came to Boston 4 years ago, but only for a day. I was in Canada with my family, and we went on a 10 day tour of the north-east u.s. states. the one thing that stuck in my head from that tour, was how much Pennsylvania sucked! maybe the fact that they took us to see an amish town is responsible for this...

The scene where i'm from originally pretty much consists of a myriad of metalcore banRAB clinging onto the tails of BMTH, with perhaps one good band who draw upon mostly spazzcore influences. They all play at the Peel, which in the past has hosted the Fall of Troy and Fear Before... not bad for a local venue.

Theres a club called new slang which drags in some pretty big indie-pop, only last week i was down to see the FutureheaRAB play there, which for Kingston is ****ing huge.

My favourite is a small pub called the Fighting ****s which has a backroom used as a venue. BanRAB such as Hot Cross, Trencher, Converge and With Scissors have in the past played there and the atmosphere is incredible, no more than a 200 capacity if that.

I'm still pretty new to San Jose, but as far as I can tell there's very little happening here. The most interesting thing I've discovered recently is that the band Sleep was from here, but they broke up about ten years ago.

I moved here from Philadelphia which, on the other hand, has a really good music scene right now. BanRAB like Man-Man, An Albatross and Genghis Tron are all a part of Philly's unique and strange scene.

I always liked Bar Fly in Liverpool. The Carling Academies in Liverpool and Manchester tend to have some good banRAB on but I haven't been to a live show in about a year.

The Cavern Club in Liverpool has the odd good act on but alot of the time it's very poor quality.

Anyone else here from NYC? There's this guy on the radio here I started listening to because I (and a LOT of PJ fans) thought he was giving away Pearl Jam tickets (but he didn't, which REALLY pissed me off). I went to the PJ show at MSG this past weekend and apparently the guy at the NY Post wrote a bad review of it. I don't read the NY Post though, I know this because this guy absolutely RAILED on the review and the guy who wrote it live on the air, it was glorious. It was Rich Russo on his show Anything Anything, Sunday nights, from 9PM to I think 11? on 101.9 WRXP. The guy goes off on stuff like this all the time, I think his deal is he doesn't have a supervisor and can say anything he wants (Get it? Anything...Anything? :D) Anyway, as a die-hard PJ fan, this Rich guy has a new fan in me, haha ^^

Slightly more on topic, one of my favorite venues here in NYC is Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side. They have a different band there every, like, HOUR, from 6PM on, weekdays AND weekenRAB. Awesome. This band I really like, Benyaro, is playing there Thursday night, June 8th, yay! Anyone else happen to be going to that show?

^^^^^^ Ahahaha, yessss...I heard this, it was great. Rich's show seriously got me back into radio after, like, five years of not listening to it at all. Except for 93.1 AMOR...gotta have me my Latin music. But yeah, Anything Anything has become, like, my Sunday night tradition, I got into two awesome sold-out shows here (Minus The Bear and Green Da--err, Foxboro Hot Tubs) thanks to his show. Good to see other listeners on here, haha

Edit: Anyone else listening right now? This guest he has on right now...banjos! Blues-y swing-y amazingness! I LOVE this!

I keep meaning to check out Genghis Tron. They have played a pub I mentioned in my first post called Trillians a bunch of times in recent years. They seem to be in the UK a lot.

Their shows usually start circa 10 or 10:30, and end around 12 or 12:30. They have two sets, with a 20 minute-ish intermission.

They play originals (soooo goooood) and sometimes covers. It's like the secret of College street, but those who know it love it, and if you go multiple times, you'll see the same regulars.

The closest intersection is College and Bathurst, right in front of Sushi Island. You have to go upstairs, so its really just a door leading to a club-space. Get the Guiness on tap, if you like Guiness, of-course. I do, and its the icing on the cake : P

If you want to go some night let me know. I haven't been in some time.
