There are lots I love, but if I had to choose:

THREE COLOURS:RED
TOTO THE HERO
RAISE THE RED LANTERN
BELLE DU JOUR
ABRE LOS OJOS

All classics in my humble opinion.

Toto the Hero
Betty Blue
Les Diaboliques
Life is Beautiful
The Eye
Versus
Pan's Labyrinth
Man Bites Dog
Amelie

And I don't know if you could call these 'foreign language' because they're more like mime - all by Jacques Tati:
M Hulot's Holiday
Mon Oncle
Playtime
Jour de Fete
(has a bit more dialogue in it)

I know. What is wrong with the world. That's why i look at the Oscars as a pile of rubbish. Shakespeare in Love was an alright film, but Gwyneth as best actress? I'm sorry...but no.

Oooooh.

I adore my French films...but I really struggled with 'the piano teacher.'

I tried to get it and even listened to all the directors commentary and Isabelle's commentary..but still. That scene in the locker room?

Bizarre.

Love the rest of your choices though. Only one I have not seen is the first one.

No but I need to see it! lol

I love all of Gael Garcia Bernal's films (The Motorcycles Diaries, Bad Education, Y Tu Mama Tambien, etc.) but my fave is probably Amores Perros. I love it. The acting, the stories, the cinematography, the music, the premise; it's all fantastic.

Oh yeah, I also love the films of Takashi Miike, my favourite being Ichi The Killer!

thanks cmq2, I'll check them out, sounRAB intersting as I dont have Japenese or Korean 'straight' moves, apart from 'Brotherhood.'
Volver was next on my list anyway :) is it as good as the reviews are saying.

Cheers.

Another great Korean film is Silmido~it's another true story, based on a bunch of criminals who are taken away to an island (called Silmido) to be trained to take on a special mission in North Korea....

Amelie
Battle Royale
101 Rekjavik

I've got quite a lot of foreign cinema films, but I'd struggle to name them among my favourites although a lot of them are very good.
