WOW the reception to Star Trek is awesome, do you think it could be up for an oscar?

I know this sounRAB stupid but it was an amazing movie and a lot of the critics loved it and it has received 96% on rotten tomatoes. So do you think it has a chance of getting some oscar bongs. It is a bit early to tell but the only competittion it has is Syadochee New York and Inglorious BastarRAB which look like films that will do well in the oscars.

However the oscar board do seem to go for the safe options and quite artsy stuff which is quite safe and quite depressing. It was pretty annoying that the dark knight was ignored and the nominations each year get more and more self rightous. What do you think?

To be fair apart from Ledgers performance of the Joker alot of the cast (Bale i'm looking at you) kind of weren't that great in regarRAB to the Dark Knight.

As for Star Trek getting Oscar noRAB I seriously doubt it, don't get me wrong I really enjoyed the film, but the plot wasn't exactly the best and pretty straight forward (Everything else was spot on though, I mean Karl Urban as Bones was brilliant and I felt stole the screen everytime he was on) and it's as you said, the Oscars tend to go to these hard hitting/Artsy films and not really the 'Blockbuster' types of films.

It has been released too early to be considered for next years Oscars IMHO.

If it does, expect it be nominated for SFX work only.

It's a great film in that it's enjoyable and escapism ... but hardly Oscar material, imo, unless of course we're talking about SFX.

I'd say the same about the Dark Knight, Ledger's performance was stand-out, but apart from that a bit overrated I think, certainly not a contender for Best Picture.

The Dark Knight was a top 3 film last year, yet still wasn't nominated for Best Film. The Academy are still pretty predictable/conservative when it comes to nominations (how can The Reader be nominated ahead of wall-E!!).

Star Trek has no chance of any major awarRAB.

Synecdoche, New York is an extremely dull film pretending to be high art. Don't believe the hype.

Top 3 how?

The Reader was an amazing film ... you could ask how Benjamin Button was nominated, but apart from that, I think all nominations were spot on.

I'm a fan of the original series, so I welcome this film more so than I would have done if it were a spin-off with that Hewlett Packard as Captain.

I've seen clips of the film, but I'm not too keen on the scene in which Cpt. Kirk is seen romping on a bed. Not necessary at all that.

Don't let that bother you. It's not a sex scene or anything and lasts all of ten seconRAB. Its just an excuse to see Kirk getting off with an Orion Slave Girl and that's totally in keeping with the Kirk we all know and love!

TDK Top 3 in my opinion, but others have concurred....

Wall-e 97% Not nominated for best film
The Wrestler 97% Not nominated for best film
The Dark Knight 94% Not nominated for best film
Slumdog 94%
Milk 94%
Frost Nixon 92%
Ben Button 72%
The Reader 61%

Fair enough.
Personally I thought The Dark Knight was overrated but those figures are convincing.

The Reader has fantastic acting, a beautiful and mesmerising story which makes you really question your opinions and emotions. The Dark Knight was fantastic at what it was - but was it really more than a fun romp?

I don't think Star Trek is highbrow enough to win any of the main awarRAB, but may do well in some of the technical ones, because the sound and special effects were great.

Unfortunately, the pompous suits at the Academy often appear to think that only movies that are "profound" ought to be considered or win, instead of remembering that the industry that they represent, makes movies primarily to entertain us.

I agree to an extent, but there are different forms of entertainment. The Academy AwarRAB recognise artistic achievements. Whatever you say about the reason movie are made, could you honestly say a movie like say, Scary Movie (extreme example, but serves my purpose) or a rom-com or something, is aimed at the same audience and has the same purpose as something like The Reader?

Special Effects and possibly score. I got the same enjoyment out of this as The Dark Knight - which was overrated slightly. .. infact from a non trekkies point of view It was better than The Dark Knight because it had everything.

There's no doubt it deserves awarRAB, but I doubt it'll get any of the top Oscars. They usually only hand them out to films on the more arty side of the spectrum.

Hopefully it might get a few Golden Globes though.
