Would You Watch British Wrestling

Wrestling IS a sport though just Vince mixed it with stories and actors and now its more of a soap opera. What about Olympic wrestling? Is that not a sport? Its a physical competition the only big difference is WWE style wrestling has pre-determined outcomes and is choreographed. Both are are still are sport.

If the pub was called The Bridges, then it was him :)

I would love to go to one of those one year, sadly as each pair passes we are losing the old generation of Brit Wrestlers, so I better get down there pretty quick.

I don't think there is big market for wrestling now it mostly UFC and MMA these days. But it might change if this new Florida promotion take's charge and wrestling could become big again. And if it does in the US it could get people over here watching wrestling again and maybe it will comeback.

The only problem is it was done before with NWA UK and UWA and FWA.

It's a shame that those are the only two names that people remember from those days, as there were some excellent wrestlers back then

I remember quite a few wrestlers from those days :-

Jim Brakes
The Royal brothers
Kendo Nagasaki
Mick McManus
Adrian Street
Brian Goldbelt Maxine
Bomber Harris (from Auf weidersen pet)

and some I can see in my mind but can't remember their names.

I recall him talking on Granada Reports not long before he died. Had he not been his size, he would have died a lot sooner.

I think he was shown up for his poor skills in his short spell in WCW as Loch Ness.

I have never been into wrestling except for when Giant Haystacks was on the 6ft 10" 40 stone man mountain bad guy - always loved watching him and his antics - makes me laugh even now :D

TBH British wrestling shouldn't be on TV because at least 90% of the British wrestlers possibly even more are terrible or not of an high standard.

Every so often an promotion runs a show a few miles from me. If they are lucky they draw a crowd of 15 people. The "talent" and I use that word stretched to the nth degree to allow that word to be used in conjunction with them are awful. They can't cut a promo or get any crowd reaction, they timing in matches is usually off. They throw weak shots which make Cena look like a character out of Mortal Kombat in comparrison.

One time I was talking to one of the wrestlers who I know a little bit and he asked me what I thought of the show. I was honest but held back and describe it as not being good and was hard work watching. His agreed with me even going as far as saying he knew it was terrible.
He then said something that threw me. They (the wrestlers) didn't give a shit coz the crowd was so small so just went in and messed about and went through the motions.

As I say I know him a bit and have spoken to him a few times. But I'm also an fan and more importantly an paying customer. What kind of impression is he making on me with that little statement?

Unfortunately I've seen similar at various shows from other promotions I've been too. Wrestlers that don't care, don't have the know how or experience and generally should never be in the ring in front of paying customers. They get work as they are frienRAB of the promoter or because they work cheap or for free.

If British wrestling were to return to TV the result was a lot of the UK promotions could get better crowRAB, but they are also an bad advertisement for the business.

Jackie Pallo (looked like Jimmy Saville)
Les Kellett (buffoon who used to fall around and act like he was drunk but just fooling the opposition. Great to watch.
Mighty Quinn. (badboy huge hulk of a man from canada,,no one liked him)
There were two gay wrestlers too (well they acted gay) but were really funny. Tag team
Used to love the tag teams. Ref was talking to one while the other kicked the s++t out of the opposition

Like any form of entertainment, a British company might put on a show in your town which is the best show you've seen in ages, then the following week, another one plays and it's the worst one you've seen.

Some of the smaller, local promotions have some great bookers behind them, whereas other, it seems they watched Smackdown once and thought they could run a wrestling company.

That's not just unique to the UK, happens in America, Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Canada, wherever there is wrestling.

In his hey day Martin Ruane (Haystacks) was a character.

Sadly, in the mid 90's when his body had basically broke down, he was a sad sight, and died a couple of years later.

just seen on that website that there is another reunion in LeeRAB next month. Think i might make the trip. That sites a gold mine of information.

I've been watching the crop of World of Sport wrestling on youtube. Great comedic entertainment from Les Kellett, especially. Even the wrestling purists like Bert Royal, were entertaining.

Staged, and rehearsed? Of course it was.

It isn't sport, just good fun, and fond memories of long gone Saturday afternoons, especially watching the audience, and the male-flesh starved old biddies who watched for a virtual grope.

Problem I have with any british wrestling is whenever I see it its just some wacky show trying to be like the WWE with nowhere near the money to do so. They have this wacky characters and silly storylines.

I really dont know why soomeone doesnt decide to go down a more legit road. A more Japanese style product. Cut the cartoon characters and soap style antics and just have hard hitting athletic wrestling. Try to appeal to MMA fans with a more legit style of pro-wrestling.

I would watch something like that!!

Ah the memories come flooding back

Bert Royal & Vic Faulkner absolutes masters of tag team wresting

Mick McManus is in real life a very nice bloke

just think its 22 years since it ended

Like i said earlier.........the average man in the street can't understand it. They can't wrap their minRAB round something like wrestling so they ridicule it. Just like people who say they hated it once they found out the winners and losers were pre determined.....how dumb must they be that they had to wait till someone TOLD them lol and of course they believe it! They couldn't watch it on their own and make their own judgements.

You can't work stiff MMA style every week, not without major problems though, look at Desmond Wolfe/Nigel McGuinness, failed a WWE medical and is now suspended from TNA for the same reason, and says he can't count how many concussions he's had from working that style.

More to the point I doubt any credible promoter would put that style on now, too afraid of another he who shall not be named type incident, and with some good reason. This isn't Japan.

I've said this before, but I remain unclear why people would want MMA style pro wrestling. MMA fans are unlikely to want to see worked matches with pre planned finishes, and if you want to watch MMA, watch MMA.

I remember a lot of people were pissed when he turned up in WWE with his mask back on. "He lost it!"

But, that's America, not Mexico I guess!

I think it was more ill health than poor skills that showed him up at that point. Sure, he was no luchadore at any time, but he looked ill at that point.

Is FWA the promo that Mick McManus set up and was shown on L!ve TV before it got shut down?
If not, can someone remind of that promos name please and if its still going!
