Would You Watch British Wrestling

As I said at the start, that's unlikely, because for any promotion to take off, they'd need a major tv channel to give them a good slot. Highly unlikely, not least because any channel that wanted wrestling could likely get an American show far cheaper than a UK show- it was said in the late 80's Joint promotions- Big Daddy's firm- asked ITV for

You were watching something that was 30 years ago. How many things do we see from 30 years ago now that we also regard as "utter crap".

British Wrestling has moved with the times.

That said, I still reckon the likes of Dynamite Kid / Rollerball Rocco / Vic Faulkner hold up even today.

Wasnt Kendo Nagasaki managed by a gaybloke. He was outrageous! Kendo was unbeaten too. Anyone ever get to know what he looked like? Always remember those evil red eyes. Loved the grappling in our house. Whole family were into it. They should never have took it off

That's what i love about wrestling. Some people really can't accept that it isn't 100% real and the wrestling companies have no problem telling you that. So imagine the common man, the brick layer coming home for his beans on toast watching 20,000 screaming people in an arena watching wrestling. They all know what it is yet they pay their hard earned money to go and watch it and enjoy it. They can't accept it.

Personally I'd prefer a well scripted, well worked low budget wrestling match to the lights and HD screens and pyros of the WWE if the script is better.

EDIT: I've got a DVD of FWA vs ROH from 2003 and it has a great 3 vs 3 hardcore match on it. The crowd are really really into pretty much every match and get right behind. In WWE a lot of the fans seem to sit there looking bored.

I have just started wrestling training for fun and I love it!

Some of the people I have watched train are amazing athletes and have very high ability, I have no doubt whatsoever that if it was marketed correctly British wrestling could fill a hole in this country that exists from American wrestling. Most fans of WWE know they sell out nearly every event they put on over here, I am not saying British wrestling would ever be as big as American wrestling in this country because it wouldn't but I think because the British indies is now more like todays American wrestling and not the 70's British wrestling, there is a definite gap that could be exploited but it obviously would need good marketing which I am sure anybody that thinks it could actually work agree with.

British Wrestling at this point, if got on TV would only make the UK look bad.

not one single company is "big" enough to take this task on. having run 1 of the UKs Top wrestling promotions i do speak from experience.

While company's like myself could fly over big world wide famous names and put on good shows to a live crowd. getting that across on to a TV audience is very hard.

when you think of how much proper staging, proper lighting, audio, camera equipment actually cost. and then spending the man hours editing and making it all come together.. nobody in the UK can do it. and do it well enough for it to be on TV.

i do not work for FWA, but they are on the right track, they are slowly getting there with equipment but still no where near close enough to do the UK scene justice.

Agree on the Dynamite Kid's book, one of the best ive read.

Liger wrestled in the UK as Fuji Yamada, kwik kick lee was someone else. Also the original Tiger Mask wrestled over here as Sammy Lee.

I would also love to see some british wrestling back on TV, i remember watching the FWA when it was on the Wrestling Channel.

I like to think I am pretty clued up on the UK Wrestling Scene, so, I need to ask out of general curiousity, which promotion did you work for?

If you don't want to publicly announce it, please PM me, I am seriously interested. If UK wrestling could make a comeback is a subject I like to discuss quite in depth.

Thank you :)

I'd rather see brit wrestling. If its not on sky, dont know why ITV dont show some. Bet it would do well. Probably too violent for todays kiddies!

Oh, sorry. Thank you for correcting me.

Also, inverse, Mark "Rollerball" Rocco ended up in Japan as one of the Tiger Masks. Tiger Mask IV I believe.

I am loving this thread... I used to go to live matches in the 70s and absolutely loved it.... I saw all the "greats" like haystacks etc... but I really loved the lighter weights.... they were really athletic and genuinely fit (as in physically!!!).... Can anyone help..?. I think there was a guy called Alan Dale or Dale Alan or something..... short blonde hair.. think he died in his 30s... he was brilliant.. and I recall a guy who was deaf who wrestled often up north... does anyone know his name?? I am a bit old now and can't remember names lol... but I can still see their faces...
I would go and watch a match live again even now if it was promoted well.. the matches I hear about seem a bit shabby now...
By the way.. I used to sit in the middle rows... I didnt like sitting too near the ring in case I got spat on or the little old lady with the umbrella got too excited and hit me in the eye... At the back you couldnt get in on the atmosphere.....It was all good fun... honest!!!!!:D

PS.. sorry for the long post... you just took me back!! thanks OP...:)

Usually, masked wrester eventually gets unmasked. In Mexico, once the mask is removed, he can never put it back on.

I think he was shaven bald with a ponytale if I remember correctly. The evil red eyes was a good effect.

The "gaybloke" you're thinking of was the late George Gillette.
