Would you try to make yourself look educated by using spell check? We all have it

so why do people correct us? The way that I spell and make use of grammar is the way I am and the way I wish to present myself and not as some pseudo intellectual. Why are there so many people ready to jump up and try to make others look daft?
Arial P you are not reading the question and you have fallen into the trap. I said "Try to" and not just "Make"

Correct spelling isn't anything to do with being a pseudo-intellectual. It's part of the basic literacy skills that everybody learns at school, and whilst some people find it easier than others, in an environment like online, where spell check is so readily available, it's just plain lazy to misspell things - especially on Yahoo! Answers, where there's a big notification every time you spell something incorrectly in an answer.

That said, I tend not to correct people's spellings online, partly because it's none of my business, and partly because, believe it or not, I DON'T want to make people look daft. The only times I'll mention poor spelling are a) if it's so bad I genuinely don't understand what's written, and b) if I'm being asked to read through or edit a piece of writing, such as an essay or an application form. In the first case, I can't answer the question properly because I don't know what it means. In the second case, it's in that person's interests to spell words correctly, because if they don't then they will be judged negatively for it.

So. If people like to look ignorant, that's OK with me.

Edit. Spot on Vieda. It's respect for the reader. Ploughing through reams of illiterate rubbish is very difficult.

No one has to "make" anyone else look "daft." One either knows proper spelling and grammar, or one does not know. The more precise the verbal expression, the better the impression. Omigod, I'm channeling Johnnie Cochrane now...

Because unlike those who choose to represent themselves in certain ways by using specific lingo, there are those who simply do not know the right way of putting things across.
For the latter, there will be people (for the love of the language or some other reason) who will decide to tell them the correct way to say it, and since they don't know who uses a word by choice or lack of education, go around trying to correct everybody.

I use spell check not to sound educated, but rather to respect the reader who is going to read what I write.
