Would you buy a Dragon Ball 'Dragon Box'? / VizBig DB Manga

Well, if your a JP dub fan, than yeah I get it. But, I kinda dig that kinda stuff. It makes it sound more old school to me.
Hell, I was hoping the DragonBox for Dragonball will have something more than FUNi.

Yeah, I'm picky.

Wow...I can't belive how misread my ealrier post was...King, I meant I would buy a Dr.Slump DVDBOX if Funi or anyone else would dub it for us....yea.

BOT: I like the DB season sets there alot better then there DBZ counterparts IMPO, I see no reason to bring the DB Dragonbox's to the US when the season sets are just fine.

But yea, I would love to see Funi or somebody pick up some retro anime thats not Dragonball, even if it is unlikely, it would be nice.

The DB season-sets are indeed better than the DBZ-ones. Still, I'd like for FUNi to bring over the Dragonboxes for one reason; Consistency. I'm gonna get the DBZ-Dragonboxes, and I'd love to have the entire series in the same format. Still, if FUNi doesn't get the DBox-masters for DB and GT, I'll gladly buy the releases that are already out, because there's not really anything wrong with them.

Funimation has this nasty habit of, any time they do a DVD release of anything Dragonball-related, always leaving themselves an out so that they can rerelease it later and bill the new release as the "ultimate, definitive" version.

The original Z singles release were censored. Then they released the "ultimate uncut" singles, only they never finished the series. Then they released the orange bricks and, well, don't even get me started. Now we have the Dragon Box Z, which is ALMOST perfect, unless you like the Faulconer score. Or want it in HD. Or want to wait for Kai.

Given that Funi's goal is obviously to perpetually have a Dragon Ball / Z DVD release on the market at all times, there's no point in my waiting for the perfect release (or even the "as good as we're ever going to get" release), because it will never come: there will always be something around the corner that's just a little bit better. Instead, my strategy is to wait for the release that's good enough that I won't be tempted to double-dip when they inevitably release a better version a couple years later.

In the case of the Dragon Box Z, yeah, I could wait on the inevitable HD Blu-Ray release or Kai, but neither of those tempts me so much as to make me wait, so I'm buying up the Dragon Box DVRAB and calling it good. I have absolutely no doubt that there'll be another release announced right after they finish the current release, but none of the potential selling points of such a release would be enough of an improvement to make me want to double-dip.

But back on-topic, as far as Dragon Ball goes, if you're already buying the blue bricks, a Dragon Ball Box probably wouldn't be worth a double-dip to you. Personally, I'm confident that a DB Box is just around the corner once the blue bricks are done, I enjoy the Japanese version of the show far more than the Americanized version, I want a version that matches my Z sets, and I only want to buy it once, so I'm renting the blue brick versions through Netflix and waiting on a Dragon Box release before I buy.

I certainly wouldn't blame anyone who went the other way, since the blue bricks are almost certain to be cheaper and they're not hypothetical, they're coming out NOW. It's a personal preference thing.

When the Piccolo stuff starts coming out I may take the plunge and buy the blue bricks for that, since that's one of my favorite arcs in the entire DB franchise and I wouldn't mind double-dipping if/when a Dragon Box release came out.

Ok, this might be changing topics a bit. But why buy the VizBIG? You complain of FUNi edits to the Dragonball series, but not Viz?
This might be the only time I will say that Viz is doing a crappy job with the manga series of Dragonball. At first they were all uncut. They didn't change much. Well, thats until DBZ vol. 12 came out.

At least FUNi trying to go back to the original Japanese version. Which, Viz did start doing that until they learn how to edit!

Ok, back on topic.
Dragonball DBox? Why Should I care?!

Obviously you don't.

But as for extras... well you can be sure there will be a fancy book inside a DB Dragon Box like there is in the Z Dragon Box. Other than that you have a much improved Japanese presentation and a slightly improved English one. So people who love the Japanese version have a lot more incentive to buy Dragon Box releases than people who would prefer to watch it in English.

The Dragon Box will offer you improved visuals, footage left out of the previous releases and improved Japanese audio. If none of this matters to you, then I suppose you have no reason to buy it. And that's fine. We don't need to debate that any further. You don't want it unless it comes with something more and it might but we wont know that until FUNimation announces a release and what will be included with it. I don't think anybody here is trying to make you buy it the point of the thread is to ask the users here if they would buy it if it was available.

Personally I'm good with the first blue box but I'm not sure if I'll get the others or wait for the Dragon Box release. I do prefer to get the best video quality I can so that's a decent incentive for me to get the DB Dragon Box should one be released.

Well, when it comes to a 'more perfect than the last release!' release, when it comes solely to the episodes Dragon Ball Z (once the other six boxes are released), the episodes (sans for being in standard def and not high def) will be perfect. If the exact same is done for Dragon Ball and GT, the releases (while missing all of the cool extras like the safety specials, trailers, etc.) would be perfect. Of course, years from now we'll probably see another release of the series that perfectly matches the Dragon Boxes as they were in Japan (packaging, extras, whathaveyou).

As much as I would prefer the art (and dialogue, and names) be left un-Viz-ised, I can at the very least have the entire series on hand for reference, bug Viz about releasing the series properly, and buy the Japanese manga volumes.

Because even the later releases by Viz aren't as terrible or continuity screwy as the FUNimation dub of the series is.

....
Wow, really?

Ok, I'm not going to say anything here, which, I can. And you left an opening that I can do it. I won't because this is not the thread for that.
(But, I so want to...)

Anyways, how many eps are in the Dragonball DBox?

Well, Viz started out leaving the manga almost to the original. As for the FUNi dubs, it didn't. Now, things are trun around. FUNi is now trying to stick to the original, and Viz is going through that dark path that FUNi made in past years.

You don't find that ood to see what Viz and FUNi are doing?
And you still say FUNi is way worst than Viz?

Whatever, personally I say just buy the Dragonball manga's. Not the Big VizBooks.

Anyways, this is not the topic for this.

Yes! I'm especially sure of that now that I have the first Dragon Ball Z Dragon Box. Sadly, I'm still buying the current release of Dragon Ball. Oh well, eBay worked pretty well for getting rid of my Orange Bricks, I can easily do it again now that I know how everything works, it's a much shorter series, and I know how great the Dragon Boxes are.

As far as the VizBig volumes go, it comes down to a matter of price vs. the likelihood of a more faithful release coming down the pike. They're dirt cheap and I don't think it's too terribly likely that we'll get a better release any time soon, so I'm willing to overlook their issues. Certainly don't blame anyone who doesn't feel the same way, though: I've been known to take the purist stance over a lot less.

I changed the thread title to allow discussion of the VizBig manga release. It might be a weird sort of corabo thread, but it's a good conversation to have and we've had a LOT of Dragonball-related threaRAB lately and I'd rather do it this way than start up yet another one. I can always split it off into its own thread later if that's the direction the conversation takes.

Wait, guess I can't vote since I'm a girl
Pretty much my reaction, too. DBZ-wise I'm content to wait for Kai. I never enjoyed DB enough to actually pick it up. I doubt I'd watch it again, and that's the only reason I collect a series *shrug*

Mind trirckery. Women don't exist on the internet. It's like a rule or something.
Agreed. DBK is probably the only real release of DBZ that I am awaiting. I'd be fine with the Blue Bricks but I'm gonna probably Netflix them.

I wonder how FUNi will handle their franchise after Kai has been released. Maybe make Blu-ray season sets?

Again, Dragon Ball Kai isn't Dragon Ball Z. They're radically different adaptations of the same portion of the same Manga, but one does not replace the other.

But why would I want the one that has drawn out pacing and fillers compared to the one that has better animation, quicker pacing, even better adapted and arguably would be cheaper due to it having a lesser episode count?

Yup, same deal as Fullmetal Alchemist, as far as I am concerned (a first and a second adaptation), although Dragon Ball Kai is far less well produced.
