Well, the Japanese one had all 153 episodes in one set, but seeing how FUNi is releasing DBZ in seven sets instead of two, I'll just assume that an American DBox-release for Dragonball would have 51 episodes on each set.

That's not a very good comparison.
Dragon Ball Kai is a shortened adaptation of DBZ no matter how you slice it. FMA and FMA Brotherhood have far far FAR more differences due to the first FMA series branching off to it's own thing instead of following the manga at all after a point. Completely new animation vs refurbished and retouched, a very different storyline as opposed to a slightly different feeling version of the same storyline with less fluff.

Not really. Brotherhood is a totally new series, whereas as I understand it Kai is about 99% recycled DBZ footage. A better metaphor might be that Kai is to Z as the Star Wars Special Editions are to the original trilogy.

'Exact same thing' is a bit of a stetch, sure. Lazily recycled footage with digital redrawings slapped over it, absolutely. A second adaptation of the Manga's story? Yup. Same series? Not at all. Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Kai might share similar script and animation origins, but the two are vastly different tones, not to mention the arrangement of footage. One cannot replace the other, because believe it or not there are those who prefer Dragon Ball Z over Dragon Ball Kai for its tone, it's pacing (even if it's terrible in spots), it's music, and it's voice work. At this point Dragon Ball Kai is nothing more than a novelty.

But, its all about the price.
And, as for the VizBig Manga. The reason why I'm so upset with Viz is that they are going through, editing the series.
I just don't understand why. At first they were all uncut, starting they are the best, better than FUNi, but now...No.
I was about to buy the VizBig Manga of Dragonball, but after reading some pages, I can't handle it.
I'm just going back and maybe getting the single manga series.

When the first Z Dragon Box came out, I did the math, and it's slightly more expensive per episode than the orange bricks (I was going by typical prices at places like Amazon, not MSRP, because who pays that?). We won't know for sure until/unless Funi were to make an official Dragon Ball Box announcement, but I think it's safe to say that the blue bricks would probably be slightly cheaper if one were to collect the entire series.
