Women, do you sometimes feel victimized by our culture's obsession with dieting?

Yesterday I was buying 2 large bags of Purina dog chow at Walmart, for my dogs. I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. (What did she think, that I had an elephant?)

Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry, that the food is nutritionally complete; so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack; he was laughing so hard!

Now WAL-MART won't let me shop there anymore. What should I do?

omg- thanks for the good laugh i needed that!

that having been said, in the past i had felt sort of harassed because of the whole thin is in attitude. but now days not so much due to the fact that even though i'm no where near being a size 2 i am comfortable with myself. not to say that i am fat / over weight by any means. i am at a healthy weight for my height and physically fit. and if no one likes the way i look they don't have to keep looking at me plain and simple!

I'll skip that endless narrative so I can focus on the original question. It is true that Thin Is In is a constant message, but I no longer feel victimized by it. I've found a good way to keep fit.

You're so rude (to that lady at walmart), you vulgar idiot. Geez, have you ever thought that maybe she asked you if you had a dog because she was inviting you to tell her about your dog? Whats your problem anyway? You deserved to be kicked out of walmart.

Hey, isn't it funny how theres so many fat lards or hideously ugly guys that sitt around saying how disgusting some girl is? Lol if they could only see themselves. I knew this one guy that hada butt on him so fat he looked like a hippo from the back and he was calling some normal girl disgusting.

haha thats a great story! TO answer your question, I always eat right and exercise so im pretty happy with my appearance. But yes, the media has convinced women that there is something inherently wrong with them and that they need to solve that problem by buying lots of cosmetics in order to live up to an unrealistic and unobtainable standard of beauty. How can they expect women to measure up to airbrushed images for gods sake?!

Not victimized, but I wish people would stop going on diets so much. I saw this statistic once that said something like 13% of all women are overweight, and 66% of all women think they're overweight. Those aren't the actual numbers, but it was something like that.
