Wolverine

Wolverine recently got a new director, and filming should begin when Hugh Jackman finishes 'Austrailia' with Nicole Kidman at the end of the year.

The director is a relatively unknown and the trailer for his next film 'Rendition' is up. It stars Reece Witherspoon, Meryll Streep and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Synopsis
The mutant known as Wolverine breaks off into his off spin-off film from the successful X-MEN! franchise. Hugh Jackman (X1, X2, Van Helsing) returns as Logan/ Wolverine-A mutant with regenerative powers, three claws on each hand and a skeleton all laced with the rare metal known as adamantium. Logan struggles to find the secrets to his past. After learning little information through the help of Charles Xavier (X2's Patrick Stewart), Logan takes his search even further by learning the full truth of his origin, while also heading in a bold, new direction.

This was on Dark Horizons about the Wolverine film:

"Wizard online has posted up an interview with "Wolverine" scribe David Benioff who went into some juicy new details of what to expect in the "X-Men" spin-off feature.

Benioff admits his favorite stories from the comics, which he re-read before writing the script, were "Chris Claremont and Frank Miller miniseries, and the Barry WinRABor-Smith Weapon X." Story elements from these are likely to be incorporated in the film.

We will see Wolverine’s first ties to Weapon X, his time in Vietnam, his first run-in with Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth), a love interest, his bonding with adamantium and fellow mutants like John Wraith and The Blob.

As for his early-year comic book connections to Japan? "[The Japan connection] is still something we really want to do. What we need to do is establish who he is and find out how he became Wolverine. And by the end of the movie, I want it to be that you definitely knew who this guy was, like Mad Max and Dirty Harry. He’s a good guy, but he’s not a nice guy. He’s just the guy you want on your side."

This was on Variety.com about the Wolverine film:

"Twentieth Century Fox is sinking its claws into May 1, 2009, for the release of Hugh Jackman starrer "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," which director Gavin Hood begins shooting later this year.
"Wolverine" is expected to feature many other mutants -- some new to the film franchise and some from one or more of the three "X-Men" films. Liev Schreiber is reportedly in final talks to take on the role of a younger version of nemesis William Stryker, played by Brian Cox in "X2."
This is the first time a title has been confirmed for the next chapter in the lucrative film franchise, based on the Marvel comic strip.
The first weekend in May, pegged as the first official weekend of summer, has become the most lucrative moviegoing weekend of the year. The date has been profitable for Marvel properties: "X2" debuted in the same frame in 2003, grossing a record-breaking $86 million, and Sony's "Spider-Man 3" grossed a record- breaking $151 million in early May this year.
As of now, the only other film staking out the May 1, 2009, date is Disney's toon "G-Force."
There's been much speculation about the spinoff, which gained speed when the studio finalized deals with Jackman (who reprises the role he played in the three "X-Men" pics), Hood and scribe David Benioff, who penned the script.
Pic explores the claw-wielding character Wolverine's violent and romantic past, and his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon X program, as well as his encounters with other mutants.
Hood will start shooting in Australia before moving to New Zealand and, later, to New Orleans. Latter location is a clue that the storyline might include New Orleans-based character Gambit, who is able to make objects explode and was a professional thief before joining the X-Men.
Producing are Lauren Shuler Donner and Ralph Winter, producers of the "X-Men" movies, along with Jackman and producing partner John Palermo through their shingle Seed ProRAB. Marvel's Kevin Feige will exec produce.
Together, the trio of "X-Men" pics have grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. Fox is pursuing another "X-Men" spinoff, based on the character Magneto.
Studio is looking to have a busy summer in 2009. On May 22 of that year, it releases James Cameron's 3-D live-action "Avatar," and, on July 1, "Ice Age 3."

Here is some more casting news on Wolverine from Dark Horizons:

"Former "McLeod's Daughters" hunk Aaron Jeffrey has gone through a screen test to play Hugh Jackman's brother in 20th Century Fox's upcoming "Wolverine" film reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

Jackman has been back home in Sydney, Australia in recent months exhaustively training for the $100 million spin-off prequel and quietly casting and auditioning actors for roles in the production which kicks off a 3-4 month shoot next month in Sydney and New Zealand.

Seed Productions confirms that not all the casting has been finalised and won't comment on Jeffrey's situation specifically.

Meanwhile Scene.co.nz reports that the New Zealand leg of shooting on the film will take place in Queenstown and surrounding areas over December and January for four to six weeks. They say more than one set will be built in the Wakatipu but shooting will also take place in Central Otago, including Naseby. Interior shooting will take place afterwarRAB at Fox Studios in Sydney. Doesn't the presence of Sabretooth contradict the first X Men movie where Wolverine asks Profesor X 'what's a sabretooth?' implying he has never encounter the man before?

I assume that Wolverine doesn't recall meeting Sabretooth before as part of his huge memory loss caused by the experiments done to him.

I consider this X-Men 4 as the three X-Men films to date all centered on friggin' Wolverine...as nice as Hugh Jackman is to look at, I'd have liked a bit more focus on the other X-Men...

Having said that, I will of course go see this...mmmm Hugh Jackman, oh and the story of course...:o

It has been rumoured that Robert Knepper will be cast in the film. Although nothing has been released about the character he will play apart from that he will be the main rogue.
Sorry if this has already been posted.

Totally agree. But it was always going to be hard to tackle the X-Men because there are so many of them, so I guess they decided to focus on the most iconic. I am surprised though that they didn't explore the all the characters they introduced in the first film more.

Cyclops they just didn't bother with, and he was a leader.
Rogue they just abandoned after the first film
Jean's development jumped forward too quickly from first to second film
Storm - well they really treated her badly

Been a fan of the comics and cartoon for years, and Wolverine was always a stand-out character for me!!

It's such a shame that Rouge was hardly in X3, because she is also a great character! It was a shame the X movies never had her discover her super strength and flying ability (although they had the chance to do that in X2 when she fell out of the jet!) and now in the X-Men film legacy she's got rid of her powers!
Im glad in X3 Storm was used better but it was a shame that Scott (Clyclops) died early on and we didn't actually see his death!
But I can't wait to see Wolverine (but please don't make it a Elelkra type cos I was looking forward to that spin-off and well it was just a painful watch!)

Ohh on the subject of X-Men -don't you wish they had Gambit in the movies - I can so picture Gerlard Butler as Gambit!!

Wolverine sounRAB promising!! Defo one to keep an eye on!

I think with Rogue, they didn't use the 'Ms. Marvel' powers as they probably would have needed to explain how she got them. I kinda prefer that her powers were more grounded (no pun intended!!)

And they can still carry on with Rogue having powers, after all the end of X3 hinted that the 'cure' wasn't permanent :)

Yeah I agree, they tried to keep this as straight forward as possible, like not referring to Jean as Marvel Girl etc and skipping the Phoenix bit and going straight to Dark Phoenix, because lets face it if they tried to interpret all the twists and turns from the comics on screen the audience would give up and be baffled.

I also, think they can easily reverse 'the cure' from X3. In fact it would make a great story as Rogue and various other mutants would know what it is like to be without their abilities, so on re-gaining them could make for some interesting inner termoil

Although Wolverine is basically X-Men 4, I am looking forward to Magneto. It is rumoured to be about how Magneto and Xavier became frienRAB, and formed the X-Men and Brotherhood.
