Will you be buying HD-DVD or blu-ray for movies?

You miss the point.

Whichever format you go for will have support missing from some film companies.
And whether companies currently support one or the other they will all follow the winner.
They want to sell discs,its not important on which format.Thats why Warner support both.

If one format starts selling players in big numbers the movie companies will start to release discs.
And with BR players at double the price of HDDVD,who will buy BR?

For mass market success there neeRAB to be either a single format or a dual format player.

I'm wondering at what stage this year Sony will relent and allow production of a dual format player as a last gasp attempt to keep Blu-Ray alive,because outside of enthusiasts who buy both formats,the cheapest players will sell.

With prices clear in the publics mind they won't go for either format.

At next week's Consumer Electronics Show LG is expected to unveil it's dual format player which it hopes to market in the US during the first quarter of this year.
If this is the case it will bypass Warner's Total HD format and should put an end to this silly 'war'.
When they reach a reasonable price I'll get one.
 
The LG dual player should put an end to the format war.

The companies are now noticing that HD DVD is leading with hardware sales,quality and is cheaper to produce a hd dvd than a blu-ray disc.

So if a studio knows that hd dvd is cheaper to produce and more people have the hardware,why support blu-ray.

I can see blu-ray still doing okay into 2007 but fox and disney to jump ship and move to hd dvd leaving only sony to produce blu-ray.
 
Well, I just see what's available on Play.com and Amazon.com. And although I would like some titles on HD-DVD, I prefer Blu-Ray's listings.

This is a good thing for me as I plan to buy a PS3. I take heart in whatever happens: the PS3 will ALWAYS be able to play my discs. (The Xbox's HD-DVD solution seems to be a little awkward)

I don't care which format wins but I will do whatever is best for me.
 
As I said I think the PS3 will give a (no doubt much publicised by Sony) boost to Blu-Ray sales initially.

However unless one format or the other offers a real blockbuster release like Star Wars , Indiana Jones ,Bond or some other "must have" titles they will both trickle along.

I don't believe for second that non gamers will buy a PS3 to watch HD discs and Blu-Ray will have the hardest time selling players due to prices.

Another drawback for HD in general: I read today that the BBC HD trial will quite possibly close in the Summer,at least temporarily and the ITV cable HD trials have all finished too.

With no realistic chance of HD on Freeview until 2012 satellite is going to be the carrier,but unless BBC,ITV or other high profile channels start full time in HD then I can also see Sky HD faltering for a while.

My first thought would be what's the writing speed of these machines.
Just how long to write a high definition movie.

That said im broke right now so like many I will wait and see which format survives the war.
 
Whatever happens Sony is committed to Blu Ray - their games for the upcoming PS3 will be on Blu Ray discs.
As for movie releases - who knows?
 
SounRAB like the HDDVD/DVD combos that were supposed to come out with one on one side and the other on the B side.

Double sided discs of different formats could be fraught with problems though.

IIRC it was the HDDVD/DVD (or perhaps it was cd's)dual discs that were problematic as the 2 layers resulted in a disc that was a fraction thicker than normal and some players would not recognise the discs.

As Warner are already supporting both formats they must believe its cheaper to produce hybrid discs than do 2 separate releases.
 
I think now the World Cup is well gone ,and early adopters ,techheaRAB and gadget freaks all have their Sky HD that the sales of Sky HD will stall.

I think HD-DVD will be the winner if only because the name tells you what it does - i.e. an HD version of DVD. What does "Blu ray" mean to the average Joe?

I'm in no hurry to upgrade unless I have a good enough reason (e.g. my TV blows up :D ). The format war just means a lot more people will sit on the fence and buy neither.
 
Don't forget the Xbox 360 with an HD DVD drive its still cheaper than the PS3 from PLAY.com and because Microsofts HD DVD drive is seperate and not built in then Microsoft will have the option to offer a Blu-Ray drive.
Personally my money is still on HD-DVD especially since no film companies have vowed not to switch if BR numbers get 'worse'.
 
While dual format players are a good idea,neither Blu-Ray or HDDVD are allowing one to be marketed at the moment.

LG require a licence for either format so they still can't sell them without support from both camps.

But give it 6 months.

When Sony realise the PS3 is not the Blu-Ray wondertool they think it is and BR sales continue to be small they might cooperate
 
HD DVD is so popular in america and now the uk,it's madness that blu-ray is still double the price of the Toshiba hd dvd player.

Unless Sony see sense Blu-Ray discs may end up like UMD discs----for gamers only.

Sony started this stupid format war and I really hope they end up like they have done before,with egg on the face
