Why would anyone be AGAINST national healthcare???

how can they cook a healthy meal, all our food is tainted. we need to learn to live on tic-tacs and water that has been boiled in your home then cooled enough to drink. only after the government has delivered your tic-tacs though. they will count out how many you get and tell you when to eat them

So what you are suggesting...
please correct me if I am wrong...
but what I think is being thrown about...

IS WE LET THE SAME BUFFOONS THAT CONSTRUCTED THE CURRENT FINANCIAL MESS RUN OUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEM?!?!??!?!?

i didnt read the entire thread, and I'm really not sure where exactly i stand on our current health care vs a proposed universal health care so i'm not sackriding, however I really would like to understand the following

it seems the anti obama folks are the ones chiming in against universal health care, and if you are anti obama I can only assume you are pro McCain.

thus i can assume you share McCains beliefs on the war and needing to help out every country that is going through ethnic "cleansing" no matter what the cost.

to me this just seems a little strange.. you have no problem that the country is building incredible debt to save the lives of other countries citizens (or maybe you just like killing bad men?) yet you have a problem spending money helping save the lives of our own countrymen?

please correct me if I'm wrong, i just fail to see the logic, maybe i'm missing something. I'm not trying to start a debate its just a point that stuck in my brain as i was reading the thread and I wanted to get it out and hopefully get a good answer.

I want to say that I understand the "I worked for mine, they should work for theirs" mentality.. i really do get it, why should you bust your balls and suffer because someone else would rather sit around all day instead of go to work or school. but I also believe in compassion and understanding and one thing we need to understand is that we ARE NOT all created equally. We all don't have the same opportunities in life and we all can't make money and afford health care.

Am I okay paying extra knowing that somewhere out there a sick man/woman/child that I dont know was able to get the healthcare he needed to save his life? i honestly think i'm okay with that. and thats coming from someone who hasnt taken any form of medication in over 5 years, and aside from a check up every once in a while refuses to go to the doctor for anything.

NO ONE can determine who is 'deserving' and not 'deserving'. You are in an equal opportunity COUNTRY! THATS what our founding fathers fought for. They gave us a place to prosper and make something of yourself. Fuck handouts. Dont count your life on handouts. Work for what u want and then you'll 'deserve' what u 'deserve'

Everyone dies. Fact. A lot of people died today. Fact. The amount of people that died today in California from no health insurance was 8. Fact lets just say it was 8 x 50 being 400 in America which is probably way more than it really is but we'll use that. At least half of them are dying from sometime of abuse to them self. Smoking, drinking, pills, obesity, not exercising, maybe just eating McDonald's everyday instead of healthy stuff, IDK. America is fuckin SPOILED!

I suggest you go to Cuba if you want to be a 'deserving' mooch

Hi there. I WORK in a hospital. I think the universal plan is crap. The two, soon to be three ER's we have are already overflowing with people ranging from "I have a tummy ache" to "I think I'm having a heart attack." Now imagine if we get universal healthcare. Even more people will be coming in. Hospitals cannot support that.

You will probably say, silly just build more hospitals. We are. We are in the process of building a third one just for our "franchise," I say franchise for lack of a better word. There are multiple hospitals all over this city alone and more coming up. I work in a religious hospital so we don't get as many people, but we are still overflowing. Now imagine the secular hospitals. We often get their overflow when they get pounded.

thats disgustingly selfish and ignorant. In this country, we see 100 percent health as a luxury. Let them fuck off and die when they dont get the repair required for their ailment to go away, better to just string them along with patch jobs to keep the poor sick and the sick poor. How about fuck you and the better you than i world you live in?

Dude, if you are worried about ER over crowding, you should be PRO national health care. The reason it is so crowded is because uninsured people can't get preventive care. That means the only option left is the ER.

Whole lotta emotional ploys and pulling on the heartstrings in here..

You want something, you work for it. /story

I'll help the truly unfortunate. I WON'T help the masses that currently abuse the multitude of socialist programs we already have.

So, my wifes bird gets sick. My wife is heartbroken. She is convinced the bird is gonna die. The bird is 10 years old and to be realistic it is certainly in the upward portion of its lifespan. Parrots may live 100 years but cockateils live only 10 to 15. She knows what this means.
I can't stand to see her like this so I suggest we take the bird to the vet. At first she is like, 'but the vet is expensive.'. I am like, 'expense be damned! This is your baby bird Linus, if you want him at the vet we will go to the vet.'.

One thing leads to another and I end up at the vet with Linus by myself. She didn't come with me.
So I let the doctors look at the bird. The doctor says she wants to perform a test on his poop. I ask how much that will cost, the Doc says $40 and I give the thumbs up.
She finishes up her work and clues me in to what is going on. She is worried he isn't eating. She would like to keep him overnight. She also wants to take xrays of him - she wants to rule out broken bones and the like. She tells me that if she keeps him overnight she can force feed him directly into his gullet, plus they have temperature controlled cage.
I am like, 'how much will this cost?' the answer: $400-$600 depending on how many days he needs.

Ouch.

So I make the executive decision: Give me whatever drugs you want him to take, give me instructions. I will take him home and tomorrow morning my wife and I will reasess.

Total Bill: $118.

About a year ago I was chasing the cause of headaches I had been suffering. I have been getting these headaches for going on 5 years now. They are awful. They don't fit the clinical definition of 'migraine' (migraine medicing does NOTHING for them) but they are every bit as bad.

So I am visiting a new doctor and the doctor is like, 'I would really like an MRI of your head so I can rule out brain tumors.'.
Now here is the thing. I can come up with half a dozen reasons why these headaches are NOT brain tumors. I asked the doctor if he thought they were tumors and the doctor said he thought it was unlikely - but if a patient has had headaches as long and as bad as I have it is common practice to do the MRI to rule them out.
I had every opportunity to say no. But I went through with it.
Why?
Cause I was gonna get pictures of my brain. How cool is that. I had hit the medical testing jackpot. The only medical test cooler then that would be an MRI of my balls.
So I get the test and they send me home with a CD of all the pictures they took of my brain.
The thing about this is, without insurance I could not have afforded this test. I mean, it was easily multiple thousands of dollars and i treated it like a toy. Hell, I thought of it like a toy. And WITH insurance it was completly affordable. So much so that the only real question that I asked myself is, 'is this test too much of a pain in the ass to go through with?'.
Not for a moment did I think I had brain tumors, yet I went ahead with it anyways.

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh some time ago. He said something about medical care that I kind of disagree with. But no matter how much I disagree, I am forced to admit that he did have a point.
He said that medical insurance should be done away with. All doctors offices should offer care that is 'al-la-carte'. You should be able to request a menu and the menu should say exactly how much each thing is. When you see your doctor cost should be, very much, at the forefront of the discussion.

He was pushing the idea that without health insurance costs doctors could afford to charge less, making health care more affordable.

I call bullshit on this. I don't think that I could afford to pay for a broken leg 'al-la-carte'. Health care is just too expensive.

But he does have a point. My decision making process for my wifes bird was much better then my decision making process for my headaches.
People are acting like costs in healthcare should not be a consideration. I think they are wrong. Costs should be a HUGE factor.
I never should have gotten the brain scan. Me wanting pictures of my brain was NOT a good enough reason to go through a multi-thousand dollar test.

Oh by the way, the bird is fine. My story about the vet was only 2 days ago. This morning I saw him chowing down on seeds and pushing his mate out of the food dish. He is back to his normal abusive self.

You don't have to agree with me that it is the right thing to do (even though it clearly is ). But surely you can see that you are already paying for it. Since the uninsured can't get preventative care, they just use the ER. That cost is exponentially higher and it is passed directly on to you.

Not to sound mean but you should read the entire thread, plenty of reasons given to be against it. Personal responsibilty for ones self and family should be at the top of anyones list. Use national health care for the ones that are truly disabled and unable to fend for themselves. I guess that's a slippery slope to be on but one of these days we might find that gray area that suits all.

many of the points mentioned in this thread are quite valid, even if you dismiss them.

Personally, I'm pro personal-accountability and dont think it is mine or your responsibility to pay for anyone else's health care. Socialized medicine generally hinders the people who need real work done from receiving it in a timely fashion. And I think most notably, it invites the government into our personal health issues, diet, habits, etc.

they dont understand, they take things at face value and go by what the tv says. the poor tard you quoted doesnt even realize that he's locked in to some corporate job and if he ever decides to quit to go after something more fulfilling he gets no care.
