Why isn't football a olympic sport but soccer is?

I don't get it, no one likes soccer and everyone loves football, yet for some reason soccer is considered a Olympic sport since forever yet a cool sport like football isn't? What gives and why is the most hated sport in the world (soccer) in the Olympics while the most loved sport in the world (football) is not in the Olympics?
 
I hate to admit it but soccer is a much bigger sport in the eastern countries, I have been in Germany (stationed in the Army) during the 2006 World Cup and it was amazing to see all the people tailgating and partying over a stupid soccer game. If their team lost alot of those fans went to jail because of all the fights and violence. They don't seem as much into (American)Football as we are.
 
Football is only big in Canada and America. I would love to watch olympic football. Imagine Peyton Manning throwing to Calvin Johnson.
