Why is the Meredith Kercher murder trial making so much news?

I greatly appreciate that ANY murder is a tragedy, but I am totally bewildered as to why this is such a major news item, and has been for two years. Khurram Ashraf was murdered in Manchester yesterday when he was robbed of his laptop and £10,000 - it briefly made the news but nothing today. Am I missing something with the Kercher murder?
I wasn't trying to score any race points here - I was merely mentioning the most recent murder in the UK media and pointing out how it was a 15-minute wonder, whereas the Kercher case just runs and runs.

And I appreciate that it involved salacious detail and was a young girl and international suspects, but so do many other murders.

There is something "extra" here that I just don't get - and I was a policeman for 30 years so know all about notoriety etc.

Reckon it's because of the salacious nature of it and because it involved people from USA, Britain and mainland Europe. It's also rare for murder suspects to do cartwheels and the splits in police stations. The lack of an understandable motive also generates interest among the general public

It is exactly the same regardless of who is murdered, unacceptable. Unfortunately her murder is making so much news and his is not because:

Khurram Ashraf
Male
30 years old
Pakistani
Killed by a British man in Britain
Foreigner in Britain

vs.

Meredith Kercher
Female
20 years old
British
Killed by foreigners
Allegedly raped
Britain as a foreigner in Italy

Exactly my thoughts when it was on the news at 3am this morning.

2 years ago and it's still on the news. Who is this Khurram Ashraf? I feel sad that I've not heard about him. What a disgrace!

As with any "missing white women syndrome" cases, it has several elements that the media loves as it sells lots of newspapers

To start off, Kercher was British, young, attractive, well educated, Caucasian, middle class, came from Leeds University, that will attract media attention from the British sides...just like the Lindsay Hawker case

so is Knox, who is similar but American and coming from Washington University, that attracted attention on the American end...what attracts media attention was that the Knox would do what some parents will do, even sell all to the media that their daughter is innocent...leading to more media attention and more followers.

...which is an ingredient to sell lots of newspapers like all MWMS cases

...as tragic as it gets, Ashraf has this misfortune to be brushed into media ignominy as he is male, 30 years old and not a Caucasian unless the case is clearly racially motivated, relating to gang warfare, large amount of money or cost of personal property being involved or youth crimes in run down council estates
