Respect your elders?

I do think that this is important... that is unless the elder in question is not deserving of respect, you know they did something that made you lose respect for them.

What are your thoughts on respecting your elders?
Do you think that repsect should be freely given to them unless otherwise lost, or are you of the opinion that respect needs to be earned, just like trust, even by your elders?

And as a side note:
if you are of the opinion that respect should be earned, than why should you need to earn the respect of those younger than you?

I'm sorry, I'm 18 years old and I don't see the point in me needing to earn the respect of a six year old! lol
and by god it annoys the crap outta me when they don't show respect :)

It's important to respect everyone, not cause of some cultural thing, but because by doing so you respect yourself.

It's also important not to let anyone, no matter his age, disrespect you

Age has nothing to do with it for me - you should respect everyone until they give you reason not to.

Generally those who shape a culture want to insure that they will not be mistreated. Parents have children and instill children with cultural values. It's no mistake that filial piety is an important part of many cultures - from Confucius onward.

In my opinion I should respect every one of my relatives until they act in a way that is not deserving in respect - by harming others or breaking the law. And even then I need to curb my tongue and be polite.
