Why is Sasuke the perfect rival?

Weaker character (in the optic of performance) than him have gotten up from their wangsty behind and DONE something about it.

Or at least become compelling villains XD

Killua (of HxH) was raised as an assasin, tortured, poisonned, electrified, abandonned at the Celestial Tower at the age of 6 just to make him tougher. He's a bit stoic but he can still have fun with Gon like a normal kid.

Or how about Haruka Tomoya, an ordinary 13-14 years old school girl with the power of 'guessing' the future with 90% efficiency. Her parents were shot by Yakuzas before her very eyes as she was captured by the criminals. She got out of her jam and now with her new found guardians she's trying to live a normal life again even while being hunted by dangerous criminals and terrorists organisations. (from Until Death Do Us Part)

Crap happens. Its no reason to be selfish and wallow in wangst. I bet he WOULD have ended up 'emo' if Itachi hadn't given him a real trauma.

Of course he done something about it, he trained and honed his skills and made himself into one of the top rookies of the village, all because his brother left and betrayed him that one night and basically told him to get stronger so he could face him and kill him. It's his life to honor the Uchiha clan, and seriously cut Sasuke some slack, Sasuke obviously wanted to get revenge because he loved his family more than anything then his brother took it all away from him, what he's doing is reacting like a human should when someone basically ruined their life.

Yeah Sasuke's pretty inconsistant.

Sasuke was mentally scared at a young age. Then mindraped again reliving his nightmares again focrefully and had been forced by Oro to endure the Curse Seal. Which was eating his chakra painfully. It's the circumstances that matter most, Sasuke was in people's hanRAB being forced to do their biding for their own reasons while manipulating his emotions. Killua, not so much.

So? I bet she doesn't have a S rank sibling trying to make his life hell and remind Sasuke of his mission in life every chance he can get. I bet she doesn't have to seek out the man who killed his clan because of something a mad man did way back in the shinobi era against another clan. And Sasuke's a ninja, his life is to seek out revenge and blooRABhed so he can prove himself. He doesn't have time for frienRAB and love, he's a living warrior.

But Sasule's crap is so psychotic it makes you feel sorry for him, he lost everything he ever loved and still thinks since he deserves salvation since his life he's been raised under the care of loved ones who were his family and freinRAB. Personally I would do the same thing, losing everyone you cared about, being spared on a whim, and being the last of your kind knowing you can't trust anyone not even people who want to help you in fear you'd risk losing the same things you once had. Actually Sasuke was a pretty happy kid back then.

Actually he respected and looked up to Itachi. Fagaku was a ****** anyway, wouldn't pay attention to his younger son because he held Itachi on a higher pedestal.

He was a direct opposite of the lead, and that has continued even as they moved from the rival status. While Sasuke is rebelling against the status quo to the tune of Linkin Park, Naruto is off trying to support the system while doing his best Hot Rod impersonation. While not exactly rivals or even the best example of an opposite foil, the two contrast well.

Sasuke ismone of my favorite Naruto characters if not one of my favorite anime characters in general, he is the perfect rival for Naruto and the perfect friend as well. It's a twisted releationship with those two, hehe.

Wow, after re-reading some of the posts in this forum I am seeing mad hatred for Sasuke, to each their own but the guy is a BA and could spawn a series all his own. Of course this is just my opinion and all, but still, I love him!

Mod Note: Don't double post, guys. Use the edit button.

This is the same idiot who throws away his frienRAB at the Leaf, let's remeraber. I'd say any pity he deserves goes right down the crapper when he chooses to leave the Leaf. Sasuke did try to seek his clan's/dad's approval, last I checked.

I don't see why anybody would watch a series about Sasuke.

Considering...recent manga developments, I have serious doubts that Sasuke is any better than Naruto now.

And...rival? In part one he was a rival. At the beginning of part two he was maybe an anti-villain. Since the aftermath of the Itachi he's pretty much a flat out villain, what with wanting to

Kill everybody in Konoha and all.

Well think about it, he serves as the perfect opposite to Naruto in every way, in a sense he's be a sennin hero, not a shonen. That and he neeRAB a better writer.

And have you ignored the countless times he threw himself in harms way to save Naruto and Sakura. Encouraged the both of them when they were still imature, and also comliemented their strengths. You know in anime, the characterization is alwayso sided. One character will say or do something horrible yet will always feel bad about it and will have meant to do the opposite but can't because of something he has to achieve first.

Sasuke in his mind doesn't deserve happiness since he's deicated to his cause more than anything. You can't blame him, he was raised in a enviroment where his father wanted a strong son instead of a weak one. If he had not been shown a genius he wouldn't develop such a complex to begin with.

I would, Naruto is not a ninja, Sasuke is.

After re-reading this topic, I suppose I should have just ignored it all together after reading this bolded part. No, you don't have to be a huge fan of Sasuke to like his character, but with the way you're defending him, I'm not so sure. o.o

Also, the comment about how Sasuke uses sworRAB/shurikens, dresses in dark colors, etc... I suppose that means you've read the manga? Yeah. Let's bounce arond in a white outfit, because you know... it's good for camo. Also, last I checked, almost EVERYONE uses shuriken at some point. Some people choose to base someone being a ninja on the colors they wear, but uh.. Sakura does wear pink after all. Chouji certainly stanRAB out as well. So what if Naruto screams? It's the enemy's fault for sticking around to get clobbered. =P

I think the "perfect rival" status for Sasuke was true at the beginning of the series - as best emphasized by the Wave Country/Zabuza and Haku arc. As the series progressed, however, he shifted out of this role and into more of an adversarial role.

But that rival role that Sasuke served is quite common nowadays. Take a goofy/naive hero and pair him with an elite, somewhat aloof rival. To name a few:

Naruto-Sasuke (early part 1)
Sena-Shin (Eyeshield 21)
Ippo-Miyata (Hajime no Ippo)
Kenichi-Tanimoto (HSDK)

In a general sense there's reasons why you could say he's not the perfect rival but when talking about Naruto and Sasuke he's the perfect rival as in he's the complete opposite. I doubt the statement was supposed to mean more than that.

In that since, they are still rivals. But it can gone from an personal rivaliry, too an much broader ideological rivaliry of chaos (Sasuke) versus order (Naruto).
