Why is my Kicker L7 Distorting?

i have a kicker L7 15" (1000 RMS) with a HIFONICS 1610 amp (1600rms) and my system is distorting. Now I know that my amp may be too powerful but the reason why i did this was because i had another amp before a rockford that was 750 RMS and my system still was distorting...Whats the problem here? please
