Why is American culture going downhill?

Let me start by saying that I am an American, I'm a 19 year old college student who just got back home to the united states after spending the last 5 months studying abroad in Australia. I travelled all over australia, Fiji, and new Zealand and I was shocked by how incredibly friendly everyone is to each other. Everyone always seems to be relaxed, smiling and treating each other with respect. Growing up in the states, I've grown up in a culture that seems like everyone is always in a rush, where you gotta get yours before the other guy gets his, people dont seem to be relaxed, and people are really quick to be defensive here in the states, why is that? The only other question about our cultural differences I want to ask is about our weight. I was shocked by how many really in shape people there are in Australia, obesity seemed almost non existent because it seems to be a cultural norm there for everyone to visit the gym on a regular basis, but America is almost exacly the opposite. I am a proud American because my country has so many opportunities, but the culture itself has gone really downhill. Why is this? What caused this? What's the root?

To be serious, my town sucks. Everyone avoids each other, no one makes eye contact or says hi. They go to jobs they hate and go home to bratty kids. Then I visit another town 30 miles away and the people are all so receptive, and spreading good vibes. You can't generalize a whole country when every town has its own personality.
The sooner I lose my job the sooner I can move out to a better area.

So much work and time is used in our lives. Because money has grown to be a big problem. You have to work to get more money. More work means less time to be social and workout. Not to mention mass differences in our society today.

Babe, I've lived in several countries, and all societies and countries have their own problems.

You see America's problems because you live there and have your entire life. However, you didn't spend much time in Australia and New Zealand, etc, so you weren't able to experience their problems as your own. They have issues too, believe me.
