Why don't some parents treat their babies/young toddlers with dignity and

respect that all people need? I know I'm probably going to come off rude and judgmental and probably offend some people, but this has really been bothering me lately. When a baby or young toddler wakes up in the middle of the night, it is commonly advised to let the baby cry him or herself back to sleep because they possibly can't be hungry. I just don't understand it. If I were to wake in the middle of the night thirsty and needing a glass of water, I don't just lie there and hope the thirst will go away on it's own. No I get up and go to the kitchen and get a glass of water. When my son wakes up in the middle of the night, needing something, I don't just lie there in my bed (awake and ignoring him) hoping what ever reason woke him up goes away on his own. He might be in teething pain or hungry or just a little thirsty. A baby can't get up out of his crib and grab a bottle (or mommy's breast) and feed himself. We can't possibly know if he woke up because he needs something or just is having a bad night.

I guess this is more of a rant than a question, it's just been bothering me. Sorry if I offended people. I honestly don't get it. It takes less time to just get out of bed and help my son go back to sleep than to lay there listening to him scream is head off.
My son is 11 months old and only occasionally sleeps through the night. Sometimes he's up 2 or more times, most of the time it's only once. (When he's not teething-when he's teething, he's up at least 4 or more times. One night, he was awake every hour on the hour.)
