Rude and ungrateful how? By choosing that establishment over others and then giving them my money for a service provided? It's not as though i've walked into a shoe shop and they've cooked me a 3 course meal.If that were to happen then i would leave a tip.But if i walk into a sit-down restaurant, whose sole reason for being open is to cook for paying customers, then there's not a chance i'm tipping. Why should i make up any short fall in the waiters/waitresses wages? Surely that is the role of the employer? Pay them a decent hourly rate, that way they're not relying on tips.
Do i tip the check out assistant at the supermarket for scanning my shopping? No.
Do i tip the record store owner for selling me a 7" single? No.
Do i tip the shop assistant for selling me a new pair of jeans? No.
Why? Because they are only doing their job, that's why.
If i'm understanding your point,it's that you leave money-at least 10% of the final bill, even if the service has been 'not great'. That's condoning a sloppy work ethic.
And just because it happens in America,it doesn't mean that every other country has to follow suit.We are allowed to have our own customs and way of life-or at least we did the last time i looked.
And here's a question for you about something that doesn't happen in America:
Why is it,in the year 2010,and with America the supposed 'land of the free' are millions of US citizens still without health insurance?
That should be mandatory-not leaving a tip for someone who is ready getting an hourly rate.
