Why don't Europeans tip at restaurants?

Rude and ungrateful how? By choosing that establishment over others and then giving them my money for a service provided? It's not as though i've walked into a shoe shop and they've cooked me a 3 course meal.If that were to happen then i would leave a tip.But if i walk into a sit-down restaurant, whose sole reason for being open is to cook for paying customers, then there's not a chance i'm tipping. Why should i make up any short fall in the waiters/waitresses wages? Surely that is the role of the employer? Pay them a decent hourly rate, that way they're not relying on tips.

Do i tip the check out assistant at the supermarket for scanning my shopping? No.
Do i tip the record store owner for selling me a 7" single? No.
Do i tip the shop assistant for selling me a new pair of jeans? No.
Why? Because they are only doing their job, that's why.
If i'm understanding your point,it's that you leave money-at least 10% of the final bill, even if the service has been 'not great'. That's condoning a sloppy work ethic.

And just because it happens in America,it doesn't mean that every other country has to follow suit.We are allowed to have our own customs and way of life-or at least we did the last time i looked.
And here's a question for you about something that doesn't happen in America:
Why is it,in the year 2010,and with America the supposed 'land of the free' are millions of US citizens still without health insurance?
That should be mandatory-not leaving a tip for someone who is ready getting an hourly rate.

All Men Are Created Equal???

some British restaurants add an automatic service charge of 15%, then expect tips to be added on top of that if you want to actually tip the waiter.

I think when people started spotting that fact, tips pretty much went out of the window.

You ALWAYS tip at sit-down restaurants in America. Generally 15% is standard and 20% for good service. It is not strictly "mandatory", but it is essentially compulsory. Do not think it is optional. If you ever come to America and try to leave without tipping, do not bother every trying to go back as you will be judged as a rude and ungrateful patron.
even if service was not great you still need to tip at least 10%...that is just the way it is!!!

Generally we used to tip after taking breakfast or lunch or dinner to butler. As far as I think, it must/should not be a compulsory practices as in American restaurants/hotels.I am unasble to understand, why Europeans don't bother to pay a little coins/notes to butlers ,just after taking theirs some snacks or foodings.

A) nobody works for tips over here so evry1 gets paid
B) were just not used to it
C) our paper money doesn't start at $1 and we cant give coins now can we
D) shut up!

I dunno what Europeans you've seen but whenever I got to a restaurant I always leave a tip, also most people I know do. And as for all Americans leaving tips, the two American people I know never leave tips and are extremely tight with their money, even though they are well off.
