I am partly Chinese and based on what I have understood, the idea of a male heir is so important in the Chinese culture or in other Eastern cultures is because it is the male heir who will be carrying the family name or surname. Of why that idea is not prevalent in the West is probably because they are more liberated and open minded. I am not saying that the Chinese and other Eastern cultures are not open minded but you have to admit that these days there are still many families among them who remain conservative and who stick to the old traditions.

A Male heir is also widely known in the west. Though it has since died down a bit.

In Western culture, it is the man who carries on the family name. And that is important to many people.

The IDEA is that men are important to society, and that men are more generally treated equally. Women, are more or less just there to serve men. And that can still be seen today, though less prominent today.

And this is a "why do you think" question. And that is what I think.
