Why do we love making fun of ourselves and our culture?

Through programs like Saturday Night Live, we laugh about the serious issues that our country is facing, and also the less serious pop culture aspects.
Now my question for you is, what makes this so appealing to us all?
Why do we love to laugh at ourselves!?

I know SNL makes fun of certain people, like Sarah Palin. A lot of people don't like sarah palin, so it was nice to laugh at her some more! And our cultures aren't perfect, so sometimes it's funny when they point that out.

Because we can. It's called satire and in other countries you would probably be shot for it. Isn't this a great country or what?

Some believe that laughter is a form of aggression. I do not. I believe that it can lighten up a person/s or a situation ar both. So I do not believe that everybody that laughs when SNL is on the air is not laughing "at" anything, some just laugh as a natural response to something that is funny to them personally, while others may laugh out their aggression by laughing "at" it.

because we have one life to live
and if were so uptight about everything our life would be wasted
with laughing we get happier and more joy out of lives
with being serious and complaining about things people do we get exactly nothing out of lives besides time wasted

We laugh at ourselves, because we are embarassed. We pretend we are in control when we're not. We make fun before anyone else can.
