Why do people get so upset about the idea of psychic powers/ extrasensory perception?

Is it simply becuase there are so many wacknuts out there that pretend to be "psychics" in addition to mentally ill people who show signs of "psychic abilities".

If so, why don't those who truly have the clairvoyant abilities separate themselves and distinguish themselves from the charlatans and ill members of society?
