Why do I get the impression that children left school better educated in the 1940's

etc than they do now? Sure kids these days are better at technology and know where to get condoms and abortions and are better educated about sex but I still think the older generation were more literate.

The older generations can read and write better, can add up without using a calculator and can point out any country on an unlabeled map or globe. They also have a better understanding of history too.

Why do I get this impression?

Because there was more emphasis on the fundamentals of learning and less watching a gay gym teacher demonstrate how to apply a condom to a cucumber. In addition, the wasteful government bloat known as the Dept. of Education didn't exist then to get in the way of education.
