Why do I get the impression that children left school better educated in the 1940's

etc than they do now? Sure kids these days are better at technology and know where to get condoms and abortions and are better educated about sex but I still think the older generation were more literate.

The older generations can read and write better, can add up without using a calculator and can point out any country on an unlabeled map or globe. They also have a better understanding of history too.

Why do I get this impression?

You do not stop learning when you get out of school so you know more fact about the world when you are 60 that you did at 18 no matter how bad your school was. I know my children and their classmate knew more than mine did when we graduated in the 1950s but less than we did by the time we had 18 year old children.
