I have both Chrisitian and atheist friends and none of them believe that.
What they do understand is that human dignity is important and nothing is less dignified that a person who tries to oppress others by using the Bible to support his own prejudices.
Many things in the Bible are abominations: eating shellfish, men trimming the edges of their beards, allowing women to speak in church, helping slaves to free themselves from slavery, wearing clothes made of 2 different kinds of material: why do people pick and choose if they believe the Bible is literally God's word? The people who use the Bible to oppress gay people: why aren't they picketing Red Lobster and Joe's Crab Shack? Eating those things are just as "abominations" as gay sex, according to the Bible.
