Why did the "Government'' award a £1.5 billion contract to the German company of...

...Siemens costing 1400 U K jobs? This ''Government'' decision was only a week after they urged British industry to give jobs to British people and their recent statements of confidence that the economy would pick up with a ''manufacturing led'' recovery. Is it me or is their rhetoric incompatible with their action?
So, it's all a matter of, 'do as I say, but not as I do''. ''What's good for the goose in not necessarily good for the the Tory gander''.The contract was not decided a long time ago but was only awarded today after competitive, but close tendering. Have a point anyway. Germany makes a lot of it's products outside Germany, like in the sweat shops of India. Well done ''The Patriotic Tories''. Now we can see how you are going to put Britain back on it's feet, can't we?
@ ''Old Know It All'', You may very well be right but according to the B.B.C, (you know, that well known British Broadcasting radio and television company), it was a "Government" decision to place the contract with Siemens. They stated this at least twice, once on the radio 4 news this morning and again during the lunchtime television news. It was their reports which prodded me to ask the question. Either you are wrong or the B.B.C. are broadcasting anti government propaganda. With all due respect old bean I'll take report of the B.B.C, as being correct.
Once again, why does the government expect British companies to recruit staff on the sole basis that they are British and not on merit. If the ramblings of "some'' of the respondents is to be taken seriously that nothing of quality can be manufactured in Britain and only those products made elsewhere, but in particular Germany, should be purchased, then boys and girls if that doesn't graphically illustrate what is wrong with G.B, today you are even more intellectually challenged than I thought you were.

Because British governments hate British workers. We were told it is was too expensive to manufacture in GB but they still manage it in Germany where costs and wages are much higher. Something wrong there. The problem in Britain is that the economy is run in the short term interests of the City, but the financial markets of the City only account for 10% of the economy. That is why the banks got billions but iconic brands like Wedgewood were allowed to fail for want of a few million. Crazy, absolutely crazy. But then is there another country in the world that would educate its kids so badly that they are apparently so unemployable that it is necessary to get immigrant labour. We are governed by mad people. Perhaps we should outsource the government, I mean, our lot don't come cheap do they ?

The british government and the one before them have allowed thousands of immigrants into our country , allowed thousands of british jobs to go abroad and then call us British lazy for not being able to find work

likely that contract has been negotiated for years. also countries give and take with one another for world commerce to happen.

When good things happen, you claim the credit. When bad stuff happens, you blame the government. The government had nothing to do with it. The trains were ordered by the train leasing companies who are independent commercial enterprises. Bombardier had the choice: compete with Siemens or downsize. They chose to downsize. That's easier than trying to get their 1960s factory up to Siemens' standards and persuading their workforce to work as hard as the Germans.

the same reason people buy German cars not British ones. They bought the best equipment for a very expensive project, they just cannot buy something just because it is British if it can't compete on quality.

German companies are often run by engineers who know what they are doing, but British companies are run by accountants - bean counters who love to trim research budgets and aren't much use actually.

by ignoring merit UK has become laggard
probably
if contract was given to undeserving more jobs would have been lost
when contracts involve 7x24 working Uk labor does poorly
do not worry some more countries from Asia which have been your colonies would join UK who are placing social justice far above the merit

My thinking is that the UK.gov own shares in the German Company of Siemens also the products made by Siemens are vastly superior to anything made by a comparable UK company.

The UK.gov should operate like the US.gov which gives contracts to it's own American Companies, mostly to small businesses too.

David Cameron is a liar when he suggests it is not his government's fault. Of course it is. He is in charge, his hand on the helm. He can declare war yet claims not to be able to say no to a company like Siemens and offer the work to a British company.

The only reason Cameron gave the work to a foreigners like Siemens is because he is spiteful and hates the UK unions - I'm not daft, I can read his face like an open book.

The Tories are the ruin of the UK.

The Conservative Party are not at fault.

The British government are obliged to abide by European law. That is, they must award the contract purely on commercial grounds (the company with the best price) and disregard any sentimental feeling.

Having said that, it would appear every other country ignores European law and awards contracts to their own companies. That is, France has French trains, as do the Germans, Italians and the Spanish.

Who is truly to blame?
