Why did he assume I knew nothing about alternative culture?

I'm small, blonde and in my twenties. A guy I was dating assumed I knew nothing about alternative culture, even though I told him I used to be a punk. He just could not compute that I ever was. He judged me and even sneered at me, thinking I knew nothing! He was very big on being part of his music scene. Why did he not believe I knew anything about alternative culture? Why did he assume so much when I know more than some pierced folk with mohawks?
