Why are well educated people labeled as "elitists" by some people?

And that some people looks to be mainly Republicans. Whatever happened to "go to school and go as far as you can"? Whatever happened to the higher learning push? Is it just bad when a black has a wealth of higher education, or is it just when they are Democrats? I don't know anyone who has as many degrees as Professor Gates. I was shocked to learn that he had that many! That is like a record breaker for real! And he works at Harvard, another shocker! The question is not about him, it is about labeling someone an "elitist" for being well educated.
When did Obama say that he was better than anyone? How in the world can a half black man ever even pretend to be better than someone in this country? Hmm seems like your own personal opinions and not FACT.
Wow Fox viewer, you might have a point there! I would not say that you didn't. That is funny, I have relatives there that think like that too lol. Sad.
Unicorn, why are you always so generalizing?! You don't know what party I affiliate with because I have never said! People who PRESUME that other people you don't even know personally are "elitists" just because, are really the ignorant people. The only time that you would see me turning my nose up at someone is if they turn their nose up at me, or they STINK. I guess that you would like people like Obama and Gates more if they were ignorant uneducated black men. I may be wording this wrong, but there is an old saying that goes, there is nothing more that people fear than an educated black man in America. Hmm interesting.
Very good point future!
But azmildma, Obama wasn't "rich". I doubt that Gates was either. Both men made their way in society. I still think that it is all based on presumptions. Now I have run into snobby people who could be called elitists. One owned a boarding school, and tried to get the kids to speak with a British accent because she thought that Brits were better. Oh, and you had to drink your tea around her with your pinky sticking out lol. And she was American, get that lol.
Que Sera, Obama is only thought of as a black man by most. Plain and simple. And he's getting just a little taste of how black men are still perceived in this country. President or NOT. Some other black men are too or they are in for a very rude awakening.

Well maybe it's "mainly Republicans", but I agree with them. Gates may be elitist or just plain old narcisstic, but Obama has a touch of nouveau riche..or petite-bourgeois. He's enamored by the big seaside shacks in Martha's Vineyard, the purebred Kennedy doggie, the well-adjusted Kennedy children going to elite private schools (-eyeroll-). It's kind of sad really. But, he scratched his way to where he is, and that's fine and dandy with me.

To be president of the US and be unsure of oneself is so strange to watch. Then again, maybe we're just accustomed to handing the keys over to another white, privileged, over-indulged puppet.

Education != intelligence. These university professors you love so much are MILITANT, MARXIST SOCIALISTS, not to mention, yes, elitists who hate any country-loving American that hasn't been indoctrinated by their left-wing dogma. These professors and universities are destroying this country.

My advice: Homeschool your children and don't let them attend these indoctrination centers.

Why are you shocked? People feel they have a right to whatever! Once that whatever has been achieved in their minds, they look down on others. They don't realize THEY are the elitists because of their antisocial attitude. No one is better than another, we all are humans just dressed in different packages. My Grandmother always told me to smile. So I listened. You wouldn't believe how happy that made people! Maybe that is why the smiley faces took off!

This is a long time tact of the Right. Educated people MUST be elitist...nevermind that the guy telling you that is a third generation multimillionaire, with an Ivy League degree, right?

Being an elitist has little to do with party--however, many liberals (not Democrats, there is a difference) hold themselves in a higher regard than others. Even YOU. I'd have to say elitists have all political affiliations, so again...

If you stick your nose up at others, believe yourself to be more intelligent than most everyone else, and also...instead of acting civilly proclaim "do you KNOW who I am? How dare you?" when asked to do something that every citizen in the U.S. would be asked to do--you are an elitist. Education does not make one superior. And in many cases, it doesn't make them smarter either.

So, even though you are thinly veiling your race baiting--you didn't do a good job. Before you attack only Republicans on racism--look to the Democrats too. There are PLENTY of them to go around. This b.s. is getting old. Generalizations for the purpose of silencing any dissent on political grounds is what is destroying this country. Right now, it may look like a good move to you--but wake up. You are destroying your own freedoms and voice in the process. Step away from the idiot partisan kool-aid and quit following the pack in this destruction campaign. You already have ONE PARTY rule in D.C. Is it not enough for you or is the realization that this ONE PARTY is destroying us too much for you to stomach?

That is fairly easy to answer. I am sure you have heard the term "Ivy League". That describes the most prestigious universities in the country. The rich can pay more to educate their children. They go to the best schools so they can get the best jobs and be the most prestigious people in our society. There is an article that was written entitled, "In Defense of Elitism" by William A. Henry III that explains that whole theory.

To a lot of conservatives (mainly southern based) education is looked at as "hoity toity."

Like "how dare them yankees learn something more than how to skin roadkill. They think they know so damn much."

When all you have to cling to is your own ignorance, all you can do is call educated people elitists with no common sense.
Happens all the time, not just in politics. I have a carpenter friend who can not understand why I went to college when I could be banging nails and building stuff.

Neocons try one tactic after another.
First they label Liberals "Elitists" and then in the same breath they accuse them of being all illiterate welfare moms.
