Why are we so culture crazy?

I was reading the newspaper the day after MJ died and I saw a two line article at the bottom of the page of a man who was killed saving his two daughters right below the MICHAEL JACKSON DEAD full page story. I thought to myself all we seem to care about is these popular icons who are really people just like us. He was a great man, yet there are thousands of great men who die every day. The only difference is we obsess over his talent, fame and eventually his odd behavior. And now we obsess over his death while thousands of other great people are dying and get no attention at all.
 
Its just a new fad. I've always been a fan of MJ, but even at work its getting to be too much. Playing his music in the store over and over like he was never around before. Next week it will all be over...
