My husband just took me out to a lovely Italian restaurant. We consider this a "dress-up" place for special occasions; we're in Ohio and the cheapest entree is $15, so it's not cheap. But there we saw two older men in shorts, sandals, and t-shirts, drinking beer and soda from bottles. It was depressing. If I want to see that, I can go to any sports bar and spend a lot less money.
On another front, I teach at an all-girls' high school. On dress down days, they look like slobs and thugs. They wear sweatpants pulled down so their underwear shows, or pyjama bottoms. You would think they would want to dress up in their cutest clothes, but they don't.
So why is our society abandoning a sense of decorum, formality, and elegance, in favor of this shabby, sloppy, super-casual culture where anything goes, anywhere? And do you think it's good or bad? I will definitely pick a best answer, and you don't have to agree with me if you support your point well. Thanks!
