...IT COMES TO CULTURE??!l!!? Im currently 20 years old, in college at Georgia State University, and am biracial: my mother is Peruvian (Latina; my mother looks white and you would NEVER think she was hispanic until she opened her mouth to speak) and my father is Guyanese (West Indian; my ancestors came from south India to Guyana in the early 1900's). As a result of my parents, I am bilingual ( I speak spanish and a tiny bit of Hindi).
That being said, it really annoys me when people belonging to a single race and experimenting with dating (AKA having sex with those of different races which then gives them some sort of entitlement to generalize groups of people- for positive or negative- stemming from the "relationship") say "Guys, it is all biological! There are NO (let me repeat that, NO) differences between us as people whatsoever. Racism & bigotry died after the 50's & 60's and/or when Obama became elected president".
They are dead wrong- there are HUGE differences between us as people. The only people that ever seem to agree with me on this seem to be other fellow biracial people.
For example, being part hispanic I can speak spanish but at times I speak it kinda funky and am hesitant to speak it. When a hispanic person and I interact, there is the social pressure to speak spanish (they of course are not expecting the white person or black person to speak it; it is a given)- when I don't, speak in English and tell them I am biracial (since I don't quite look like them) they sort of acting like "Oh what? You ashamed to be part hispanic and be considered one of us? lol, whatever......." and distance themselves from me little by little since I am not culturally rooted like them......and it shows.
With Indian people it is even worse- they don't really even give me a chance. They just take one look at me (I look both hispanic and Indian) and they sort of think "He aint one of us.......". I tend to distance myself from both races for the most part. ALL of my friends are white, black or people mixed such as myself.
Being biracial and having been excluded and not being able to identify/be accepted by either group (although I am "acquaintences" with some) has literally made me a spectator of races and ethnicities the same as me or different.
What is your take on the way people percieve and interact with different races & ethnicities?
